We never saw this stuff in South Africa in the 1970's.
In fact we only got 4 hours of television in 1976.

I can't say the exact year, but it seems to have been quite normal for stars to be interviewed sozzled.
And of course, back then tobacco smoking was the norm everywhere.

So here we have an encounter between Oliver Reed and Shelley Winters.

Is this passive-aggressive ex-lovers' behavior?
Because what she does is just way out of line.

But what can you do?
And in that sense men were just taught to "laugh it off".
And in future they'd think - bah, women they're all crazy anyway.

I'd rather spend the rest of my life picking berries and camping in the woods before I come close to another female.

He was outrageous....lived in the fast lane 24/7....
Here's a compilation of his drunk shenanigans on TV. If you knew Reid was a guest, the ratings went up.

And here he is back on the Aspel show, perfectly sober with Sir Richard Attenborough (brother of David) and John Thaw.

Shelley Winters was bat# crazy. That said stuff like this was encouraged if not outright set up sometimes. I always liked Dean Martin flicking his cigarette ashes in George Gobel's drink and Gobels didn't even notice.

I just love the old Carson show. They have reruns on right now, and they tell the date it aired.

That man had the worst luck with animals, yet he still kept bringing them on.

Did he ever have the emu?

Those were classics with Jane Embry and I forgot the other animal guy's name. Carson ruled the late-night, NBC had to ask his blessings to start Saturday Night Live.

LOL no, the poor guy had an actual tiger cub, latch his claws into Johnnys "private area"
The look on his face was priceless, but man, he still kept it together.

I think the guy you're thinking of was Jack Hanna. From the San Diego Zoo. I always loved it when he brought animals on Johnny's show.
