I was just monitoring the global chess board and happened to notice an article about the Australian Government essentially twisting Google's arm on their technology transparency after 2019's Media bargaining code. Facebook and Google have not been very forthcoming, with Google threatening to cut Australia off completely from its services. I thought it was funny though to see them walk that back after Microsoft offered to step in to fill any such possible vacancy.

Australian Treasurer Josh Frydenberg says that there has been “great progress” in talks between the tech giants and Australia in regards to the new Australia’s News Media Bargaining Code, which first emerged in 2019.

The purpose of the bill is to establish reciprocity for news and media organizations mandating the tech companies to pay for content as well as implement certain transparency about the algorithms in use.

Both Facebook and Google have rebutted the demands and states that it would give Australian media companies an unfair advantage by knowing the inner workings of how their technology works.

Google has gone so far as to threaten to completely bar Australians access to their services.

Microsoft has offered to step in and offer their Bing services which can explain the sudden willingness of Google & Facebook to make “great progress”.

But they have no problem selling to China.

China owns the aussies.

What's going on?

Not like they care about America, maybe they're just afraid of surveillance in their homes.

Falling in line with Fairfax and Murdoch’s old imperial media empires that have no revenue sources and are in their death throws

They aren't, but that wasn't the point.

Having talks with the likes of google and facebook is asinine. The government should make the law and they should follow it without ridiculous delaying tactics. If they refuse or start making stupid statements they should be punished.

Facebook has just blocked news content in Australia.

They have given them the finger rather than falling in line.
