Even if the wall were made out of paper, the fact it has to be cut through in order to pass it makes it easy for patrols to see where people are crossing at. Where the last crossing happened.

Unless you put a bunch of holes in it, just for the sake of doing so in order to obfuscate information.

True, but then they're still putting in more effort than its worth. Coyote/human smuggling is a business. It's only profitable if you spend less than you collect from your customers.

Also, it will probably be obvious which holes have actually been walked through by 50 or 60 people and which ones only have one set of foot prints.

Tunnels are dug for drug smuggling not to transport illegals across the border.... The money is not there and it’s the cartels doing the tunneling.a reply to: iplay1up2

As a drug route, a tunnel works great precisely because only a few people ever know where it is. The same small group of smugglers can just re-use it again and again and never have it discovered.

Coyote routes, on the other hand, have to be"throw away" routes. Each human being you smuggle through it is a potential witness or story teller. A secret shared among 100 or 1000 people won't stay a secret for long.

A tunnel is too costly to waste like that.

If they're not using the holes they put in the wall, and you're not repairing the holes... then why even make the wall?

The steel would make a perfect reinforcement for a concrete slab.

Cut through a few feet of 20,000 lbs-in concrete and get back to me.

They're not going to put 10,000 holes in the wall. That would cost them almost as much money as it cost us to build it.

Remember: human smuggling is a business.

You don't have to make it impossible. You just have to make it expensive and it will stop happening.

No it wouldn't. Fertilizer bombs cost a couple hundred dollars each. They're very inexpensive weapons. Also, only 1% of illegal immigration in the US comes through the southern border, through open spots rather than checkpoints.

It's not a question of how you cut the wall.

The expensive part here is sending your agent TO the wall, at multiple locations, carrying bombs with him. And he doesn't get caught?

If some guy is setting off fertilizer bombs, he's taking a pretty big risk. (And if coyotes start using bombs, they run the risk of being reclassified as terrorists.)

I don't know where you're getting 1% from. Actually you have to BOTH make it past the border itself, AND make it through checkpoints in the 100 mile zone in order to be home free.
