A pretty good Rand Corp video (2017) on the progress and problems China, USA, and Russia are facing during development. Start at 1:38 unless you want to watch some missile launches.

The projection is within 10 years the problems will be over come and the hypersonic systems will be more feasible and deployable.. And yes so far there is no defense against something which from launch to impact the time frame is so short.

Great video but given technological advancement in Quantum Radar and computing power the SDI generation of anti missile - anti satellite rail gun's (not the new generation portable variety these are monstrous in size) that the US supposedly does not yet have - in spite of a lot of evidence to the contrary can still if those in charge of them can be made to comply, easily take out hypersonic objects', remember the projectile these thing's fire is higher than ultra sonic speed, the only problem is that a saturation attack would be able to overcome limited numbers of rail gun sites hence the increasing importance of the newer generation of smaller naval rail gun's (And the new generation of plasma and directed energy weapon's) which so unlike that original ship mounted first foray into rail gun's by the US navy that took up the entire hull of a destroyer and the ship had to be maneuvered to line it up are actually easily and rapidly aim-able, the large rail gun facility's however have limited aiming potential since the aiming is carried out by powerful magnetic fields in the final stage of the acceleration and is only by a few or a few fraction's of a degree so they while still undoubtedly the most powerful such weapon facility's on the planet are likely hampered by there tactical assignment and limited target range.

N.B.

The downside with the smaller rail gun's being developed for tactical deployment as ship mounted and potentially vehicle mounted array's is that they do not fire as fast as the larger rail gun facility's, they are still fast enough to catch a hypersonic object however but would have a far higher fail to hit ratio as a result of there higher launch to target time window.
(And probable far inferior range)

Currently there are two countries that should have no problem making hypersonic weapons, and frankly it isn't that much of an engineering feat to do so. There is a very specific reason why ablative heat shielding techniques are closely held secrets on a national level.
