Of all of the above I'm only interested in 5 forums, so it's much easier to just look at the 5 threads with the most recent posts on myATS.

If you were to use the method of going into specific categories, you would miss all sorts of threads.

I do all the time. I enjoy looking back at older threads, some of the best threads are several years old but still relevant. It's better than television and well worth a look, try it before whining.
