Analysts now believe Ms Fan could be the victim of a government crackdown on “yin yang contracts” – a form of tax evasion in the entertainment industry in which large fees are hidden from official records.

I suppose they do not have to tell anyone if they arrest or detain you in china.

“Maybe this is just scaring folk to ... start paying taxes. If someone were to get busted, then I think it would send a ripple effect to how film production goes forward in the coming years.”

If that were the goal then they would have made it clear they have arrested her.

One of the apparent contracts showed an official salary of $1.6 million, according to CNBC. The other indicated she had received unofficial additional payments of $7.8 million.

It is suspicious that the pics of the contracts are not shown.

The star, who turned 37 on Sunday, topped Forbes’ China rich list for entertainers last year, with earnings estimated to be more than $43 million.

She's either been arrested or is hiding in fear of being arrested.

It's a shame that we are in the 21st Century and things like this are still happening. It's like the world is devolving.

Hope she's turns out fine and they release her in due time. Maybe she should've defected when she had the chance.

This sort of thing is not uncommon in China, not by a long shot. Even fairly influential people, like high-level bankers and businessmen, occasionally "disappear" for a time. Usually, it turns out they were being interrogated due to suspicion of wrongdoing.

It's like the world is devolving.

There's no 'like'. The world IS devolving. Some of us are left on the sidelines watching it all in horror.
