Below sea level these Hawaiian volcanoes are made up of Palagonites. We also call these, pillow basalts. They have cruddy yellowish textures. Nowhere near the strength of basalt "gems". Those are the five sided crystals, which ring, if they're not cracked. Devil's Tower, in Wyo. is a good example of this. Underwater edifices will look like bunches of grapes, rather then the columnar basalts in Devil's Tower.

Today is the 38th Anniversary of Mt. St. Helen's last big blowout. Let's all hope that no one gets killed in these Hawaiian eruptions.

Just today, I've heard warnings about micro fractured quartz xtals coming out of the newer and more energetic lava fountains in those rifts' volcanic fountains. You can see ash, but the real danger is this invisible killer, which eviscerates your lungs. Simple paper face masks won't stop this from carving out your lungs.
