I was thinking about this last night when I couoldn't sleep. I've come across a pantload of Dave's in my time, quite a few became friends. Not David, Dave. Maybe it goes with familiarity but I've only had one David as a friend. A tad stuffy but still a decent guy.

"David" is a lawyer or some other professional guy. Dave is a mechanic. Coincidentally my mechanic's name IS Dave. Damn good one at that. And you know that a good mechanic is like a good doctor. You keep them as long as possible. Dave is also the guy that makes sure you don't puke on yourself in the bar parking lot after Marcy left you. He gets you home. Laughs his ass off when you knock over the garbage cans but makes sure you're laying on your side when you pass out. That's just Dave.

You seldom hear, "I'm going to kick the # out of Dave." He's just not that type of guy. If you do chances are either alcohol was involved or the guy's an asshat.

So here's to you Dave.

I'm more of an Alan guy (my Dads name, just by coincidence)

I knew a Steve too but he was so cool he was cold. Almost frozen in fact.

ETA Good mechanics are always nice to know. When I open the bonnet (hood) of a car I just see magicians, hamsters and mythical creatures making it all somehow work. I can refill the oil and water and soap for the windscreen wipers but that's my limit. Hopefully he helps you out on the cheap, being a nice guy and all.

edit on 21/3/18 by LightSpeedDriver because: ETA

My father in law and his son "My brother in law" were both david.

Older one was Dave, professional alcoholic.
Drank himself to dementia at the age of 60.
Now 72 and still in a nursing home as a burden of the state.
He gave my wife more baggage than an airport.
Took me several years to put her in a good place.

The son is Davey. 41, Yep, an alcoholic.
But he wised up and quit drinking.
Went to Florida as a family last year and I bought a case of beer. He bluntly told me that I was a piss poor alcoholic cuz I didn't find the bottom of the case in the week.
He's still got issues to work through but his ex wife was a total nut case so that didn't help.

That's my close "Dave" experience

Dave can be a little dense, though...

( ps; Steve is not cold, he just has a cold heart. From giving it to ice queens too often
)

The diary I kept in my college years shows me encountering a "David" round every corner, usually interested in the same girl that I was interested in.

Meanwhile, half the female students were called "Sue".

As long as Dave doesn't get locked out, it's all good.
(Love Red Dwarf btw, best sci-fi comedy evah!)

I knew a guy named Dave. Dave was a dick. I mean a total douche pickle. I lost count of the times he almost got my friend and I arrested. He would throw pop cans and stuff at cars while I was driving and also shop lift.

I was gonna ask why you know so many dealers, but then I read who posted it.

I was talking to a very good friend of mine a few months ago about how everyone that we knew named "David" were just awful awful people, but everyone that went by "Dave" were fantastic people. Kinda weird.
