The numbers swell pretty fast. There's the group doing security, the group flying ahead, I think the President always gets a small military component too, the press corps is over 100 people, the various people involved in deals, the assistants for those people, their security, pilots, backup pilots, the Presidents assistants, and more. 1000 is slightly above the norm, but not by much.

There's a lot of support infrastructure that goes to wherever the President is.

Previous presidents have had entourages abroad (even to sensitive areas) with 300 in attendance. - including politicians and security. One thousand is an unusual number. I'm wondering what they're all there for and why he couldn't do it with less.

...particularly after seeing some of the oddball expenses in the campaign finances that he turned in.

Maybe if you did some research you would know foreign visits by Presidents often include 1000 +/- person entourages.

* - Obama lands in Belgium with entourage of 900 and 45 armored vehicles for ONE night only costing THEM $10.4 million in security

This is nothing new, let alone newsworthy / thread worthy. also the numbers also include security details. Obamas visit to Australia included 200 secret service agents. I can only imagine the number of agents taken when visiting this part of the world.
