Hurricane seeding and Rainmaking....

On 13 Oct 1947, the U.S. Military (as part of Project Cirrus involving General Electric) dropped 80 kg of dry ice into a hurricane in the Atlantic Ocean, safely off the eastern coast of the USA. (Havens, Jiusto, Vonnegut, 1978, pp. 41-42) The hurricane changed direction and traveled inland, where it did extensive damage to property in Georgia. The U.S. military classified the data from the seeding of this hurricane to frustrate litigation. (Ball 1949, pp. 225-226, p. 233)

Attorneys for General Electric reviewed and censored Langmuir's scientific publications to avoid tort liability for damage by this hurricane. A biography of Langmuir says "For the first time in Langmuir's long career [38 years] at GE, officials occasionally wanted to know in advance what he was going to say in his public reports." (Rosenfeld, p. 205)

Langmuir (1953, p. 212 of Collected Works) believed that there was approximately a 99% probability that this hurricane's change of direction was the result of the cloud seeding. Langmuir's opinion about the effect of the cloud seeding on this hurricane is not mentioned in any of his publications in scientific journals, but is mentioned in the 1953 final report on Project Cirrus, which was classified by the U.S. Military. It is likely that attorneys for General Electric directed Langmuir not to make any public admission that cloud seeding caused the hurricane to change direction, in order to avoid litigation against General Electric by victims of the hurricane.

Was just watching a special on Discovery when this 'Project Cirrus' came up.Not only telling of what I posted above, but also the telling of 'Rainmaking' during the Vietnam War.

1967: The United States begins a top secret rainmaking operation in Southeast Asia to hamper the movement of North Vietnamese and Viet Cong troops and supplies. It runs until July 1972. During the Vietnam war.

28 January 1974: Acknowledging that his 1972 testimony was false, Laird (by then counsel to President Nixon) privately admits that the US used weather modification in North Vietnam in 1967-68. Contents of the letter are leaked.

20 March 1974: In a top secret Senate hearing, the US military admits to "Operation Popeye", a cloud seeding program in Cambodia, Laos, North and South Vietnam. The Pentagon says Popeye ran from 1966 through 1972. At least 2,600 flights spent over 47,000 units of cloud-seeding materials.

Info gathered from here and here ( Operation Popeye )

Project Popeye is said to be for use in Vietnam to turn travel route of the Ho Chi Minh trail into mud....and it was...a nice deep trail of mud!
===============================================================

So if this was being done then, could this have been used now and could it have been the cause for the awful hurricanes we had this past season.Is this not proof enough that we CAN in fact manipulate weather or at the least try with some sort of result leaning towards MAYBE it can be done.

Here is some more interesting stuff on all this.Seems a man named Bernard Eastland has three patents for Weather Modifiction and was hired by ARCO (oil co.) to make the satellites for use in the HAARP program.

Great post! Ive never heard any of that stuff before, i thought the bit about Vietnam was particularly interesting. Why do you think the military would want to cause Katrina etc? Is there a "motive"?
Really interesting.

More info here on both Project Cirrus and the subsequent Project Stormfury.

Also, more info on Stromfury from the NOAA

The most recent idea has been the dyn-o-mat polymer devised by Peter Cordani. Most hurricane experts dispute it's ability to affect hurricanes though, and I'm not aware of any further trials since the 2001 one.
