There are now several methods of ''quoting'' on the ATS boards, each of these tags are designed to show the type of quote, whether it be a quote from a member, an external news story quote or simply an external quote.

Link to Thread (not required if quoting some else in the same thread)

[quote] [/quote]

When to use: Use the normal quote tag when quoting other members.

Link to Source Goes Here

quoted content

Please visit the link provided for the complete story.

[news] [/news]

When to use: On ATSNN.

[ex] [/ex]

When to use: When using an external source such as an online Encyclopaedia or non ATSNN news sources.

Important Note: Always remember to put where you got your quote from, and remember to include the url of the source.
As this gives the proof that it is indeed a 'real' source and secondly it credits the owner of the source.

Just to add to and slightly refine this excellent piece of information...

The NEWS quotes can be reserved for important breaking news in any thread, not just ATSNN. However, even older news articles often find relevance as a reference in posts about breaking news... in that case, it might be best to use the EX quote tag.

So, when in doubt.... the [ex] --> [/ex] tags are always your first choice when including any external content in one of your posts. If it's breaking news that is current within a few days of your post, then the NEWS tags should be used.

You know? I've been wondering how they did that! Thanks Benevolent Heretic for showing me the way.

EDIT: And thanks UK Wizard for much needed info.

Well in UK's post above, he has displayed the buttons for the [ex] [/ex] & [quote] [/quote] code. If you choose not to use the buttons then it would be simple:

[ex]

Text Goes here

[/ex]

Would look like:

Text Goes Here

I have not seen a button for the [news] [/news] code, so you may be required to type the code. Maybe a staff member could clarify this for us.

whoo hoo - it looks great

basically it allows " fixed spacing " and other stuff - such as the " tab " and indent commands from word to work correctly

there you have it

Quick Trick: Anytime you see something in a post and you want to know the code for it, just hit the quote button on that post. Use your browser's back button when you've seen it if you don't plan on posting a comment.

I'd have to agree that its quicker and easier to just type them in manually as you go...

Anyone looking for a list of the codes check out the BBCode page from the ATS handbook. You can do quite a bit to customize your posts.

I think Zedd (full name unspellable) gets the credit for putting the handbook together.

Any question you have is covered in there somewhere.

Regards.

Yes the white background I was looking for is done by {exnews}. Don't ask me how they got that, it isn't documented anywhere. I suppose its just combination of the [ex] and the [news] references. It looks like this:

Misc. HEADLINE HERE. Misc. HEADLINE HERE. Misc. HEADLINE HERE.

you can use [ im ] and [ /im ] for pictures, which also gives the source. [ img] and [/img ] work for ATS and Photobucket etc. [ats ] tags can be used for ATS uploaded images.

Thats cleared up what this is for, I didn't know. Fairly rare too.
