They could purchase the site - the code and database, etc, to run the site and go from there,

That would require knowing who the owners are and how to get ahold of them. And that seems to be a mystery even to the staff.

or, if no one does anything, the site will eventually just not be accessible. It will just drop off the internet.

And that drop off would happen when the server lease was up and not on the May 18th date that the name domain is up?

Would someone consider starting a countdown thread?
66 days 'til Armageddon...and counting.

We need to update the 'party like it's 1999' event ... move it from May 23 to May 17. ha ha ha Seriously though, I'd expect an all out brawl and mayhem here if it was known that the end was May 18th.

My domain name registration costs me about $15 per year and when I let go of domain names, the very day they expired other companies bought the names and used them for pornography, even though the names had zero to do with porn. I believe that the traffic the names generated over the years was why these companies bought the names and used them. I think that paying for the domain name when shutting down a website is a good idea if you want to protect the reputation of the name or to sell the name, of course, that is only if you actually care.

So, because $15 is chump change, if no one wants to pay it or have it auto-paid even though the server may be paid up is a sure indication to me that no one here gives a crap. As someone who will consider conspiracy theories, I have been tending to believe that this may be one.

Correct me if I'm wrong but two people have now brought up the server still running and that means ATS won't go down when the name domain ends, but will go down when the server is no longer paid for, right? So that's the end date. Not the name domain date. And no one knows when the server is paid up for till, right?

I hope I got that right.
This tech stuff is a foreign language to me.

Can anyone state SPECIFICALLY what it would take to keep ATS going?

Not what can't be done, but what CAN be done.

Otherwise, how about a pointer to an alternate world for those of us who are interested in staying in touch? Would that be Discord, or somewhere else?

There's a solid chance that the site owners turned on auto-renew when they set things up. I always do with my domains. If I let them go, it's because they have no value.

My server is on a three-year contract, I have to renew the domain name annually. The server and the domain registry are two separate entities with separate contracts. I'm not sure how anyone can buy up a server contract and all the content without the owner's consent. I would certainly have a problem with that if someone commandeered one of my websites as I have copyrights to everything including the coding of each page. I have a feeling that this is to remove the accumulated information from public to private use. I suppose that if the server is still up it may be possible to get to ATS via an IP address once the domain name expires, not too sure about that though.

ETA: As far as what will be left in the ruins of a fallen Above Top Secret website, some here are preserving threads offline. It is possible to use your browser to save offline web pages for personal use. Although pretty crazy, with this method, all of ATS could be saved offline. Then there are a couple of online archives like the Wayback Machine and cached pages on search engines. Otherwise, all this accumulated knowledge will soon disappear.

Perhaps someone mat be patiently waiting for the domain to become available to allow it to be reborn like a phenox emerging from the ashes of the old site burning in a crucible of destruction and neglect.

We all know ATS is not doing well and the owners are AWOL (Absent With Out Leave).

Do we really know that?

What if the new owners turned the data collection on all of our authoritarian sellouts, after finding out what was really going on behind the scenes? Why try to pipe up the (former) gatekeepers from staff when they've established communications with banned users instead, and shut down the Mud Pit entirely to archive the criminal content they found after being tipped off by said member?

Oh boy...

IF someone grabs the domain name, and someone will, they can make it point to whatever server they want, at any time, if they choose.
Like MSB said, the ATS server might be still be accessible even then, via it's IP address, if the server lease is different than the domain name lease. Keep in mind there are "ifs" in there, unknowns.

The minimum needed to keep ATS alive in it's present form, is to get the domain name and to get the code/database. If you just get the name, you have to create a whole new site. If you get the site (code, etc) you can run it under a different domain name.

So we are back to when the domain name ends on May 18, then ATS will go black?
Or am I reading that wrong?
Sorry if it's a stupid question, but like I said, I don't understand this stuff at all.

I almost wrote a similar thread about March 20th being the day it goes down. That’s the date of the credit card expiration debacle two years ago when it went down. Today could be our last day…..

AHHHH good information. Thank you.

That says that if the owners don't renew their domain name then after five days the site stops working.

So if the site owners don't reregister the domain name by the 18th of May, then ATS should go dark May 23. RIGHT? Or am I reading that wrong?

So the end of ATS all out 'party like it's 1999' brawl will be on May 22. ha ha Just kidding. But really ... it could happen.
