This is from Hebgen Lake, north and west of Yellowstone. seismo

Scratch that----Mag 4.8 in the Park, NorthWest corner. Same spot as a shallow Mag 3.0 two hours earlier.

Something's cooking!

Geofon reports it as a 5, while USGS says it's a mag 3. That is quite a sizeable difference, is it not? Can someone clarify?

Here is a look from the Norris River station, waves are clipped, and showing plenty of small aftershocks. Link

And here is what the mainshock looked like unclipped. B945

This is the link to the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory monitoring page, showing the foreshocks and the larger quake.

This must make for an interesting Sunday morning wake-up call for Jake Lowenstern & his crew.

Two incidents reported now by USGS, the first being a 3, the second a 4.8 two minutes apart.

TA, you around? Any chance you can generate a spectrogram of the doings up near the Norris Canyon?

Hmmm, if you look carefully at this seismo you can see the aftershocks are getting bigger. More in store?

Woke up late this morning and pulled up the USGS site as I often do and ow! It caught my eye just after seeing the 4.4 in Oklahoma. Thought to myself, hmmm that looks a bit larger than usual...Very relieved that I'm not scheduled to work there next week or I'd be heading that direction already.

I was thinking about you Sageturkey--glad you aren't in the Park now.

Two more mag 3's are rolling in at the moment....
ETA:
From GEE sorftware:
2 recent quakes--only 12-15 micron/sec amplitude. Mag 3.1 & mag 3.3.

The mag 4.8, for comparison, was over 700 micron/sec amplitude. (ignore the top trace--that is in southern California)

I would say you have said it quite well, old sport. Yellowstone may just turn out to be God's way of helping with the American obesity epidemic.

Although these are showing at one station as place of origin all stations I've clicked on show activity from that one larger one. ?

It's a big park but in the scheme of things not too big so maybe that's why. Hopefully just releasing some energy and that will be it.

A 4.8 magnitude quake rocked Yellowstone National Park in Montana, the US Geological Survey said. There were several aftershocks with a magnitude over 3.

There were no immediate reports of damage.

It's been a couple of minutes and no quake so what is the GPS picking up on - slow movement of what exactly?

Not sure, we need someone like TA to analyze. It looks to me like it's dropped in elevation a bit.
Enough to trigger the warning perhaps?

From a laymans perspective this may mean it's releasing energy. There has been a gradual uplift around that area so a sudden drop may be good.

I'm confused, Sage. What warning? I looked at the PBO GPS data for Yellowstone a little over an hour ago--there was no warning. (Ah, I get it--the yellow dot on the map shows the station you are looking at- Gold means warning of poor data--there are no stations highlighted in gold)

The GPS is showing the ground movement at the surface over time. Over the past year, it shows uplift of approx. 50 millimeters (2 inches), as well as a small push of the Norris station to the SE. Looking at the stations surrounding NRWY (GPS monument), it looks like the uplift is centered to the NNW of Norris Basin.
Elsewhere in the park, the land is still subsiding.

Have a look NRWY GPS.

In the middle of the page you will see a hyperlink in red that says "Nearby GPS plots". That will show the stations in the map to the right. (Red indicates no real-time data available (broken) , yellow is the station highlighted, green = stations with recent data)

ETA:

Nevermind. I'm so slow at composing a post--you'll have figured it out, lol.
