At least 16 people have been killed following the tropical depression Merbok crashing into the east coast of Luzon in the Philippines. There has been a week of bad weather and reports of up to 129 people dead or missing. Over 1500 people have abandoned their homes in Dingalan, and 200 houses have been damaged. The air force claims that Dingalan has been isolated due to floods, and is running out of food and supplies.
Two air force helicopters were scrambled to airlift three children who were injured by fallen logs in Dingalan.

One of the children later died in a hospital in Cabanatuan city, said air force spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Restituto Padilla.

The civil defense office said military trucks and rubber boats were also dispatched to the area to help with the rescue.

Several roads in Aurora province, including in Dingalan and San Luis, were blocked by floods or landslides. Damage estimates were not yet available.

The reason that this storm is causing so many problems is that it has been travelling so slow to the west, towards the South China Sea. This slow progression is due to the northeastern monsoon. As a result of this several areas have been continually battered by severe weather. This is a disaster for the Philippines as many homes have been destroyed, lives lost and buildings destroyed. Hopefully the storm will pass soon and the normal can begin to be restored.
