Need help so calling bass players....or anyone who knows metallica

Right my band has just decided we are gonna cover Metallica - For Whom The Bell Tolls (good song I like it). Anyway we can play the song all the way through so can I including the intro now here is the question what is used to get the effect the bass plays, the tab I used to learn the song says distortion but I'm not too sure, my friend thinks it is wah does anyone know for sure?

There are two effects:

Distortion
Wah-wah

That is what Cliff Burton used on the original recording. I believe Jason Newsted used only distortion, but the wah-wah really makes the right sound. If you don't have distortion, try pushing your gain to max, and have less master volume instead. Much middle would also help. Then it's just to play it
