Stories of these kinds of unusual and persistent types of “ghosts” are interesting. If these events are true it brings the very nature of what we believe are ghosts into our physically world, to the point of interacting with matter as we know it.

More disconcerting these events or stories depict the spectres (?) looking and acting like living people, and interacting with the individuals who encounter them.

The basics of the events are described as follows..” a weary driver traveling at night picks up a strange hitchhiker, drops him or her off at some destination, then somehow later finds out that the hitchhiker had in fact died months or years earlier - often on that very same date.”

Even famous personalities are not immune from such happenings.

As soon as I saw your title I thought of the Telly Savalas incident. I live near Dartmoor and there have been some phantom hitcher incidents reported on the roads that cross the moor. In winter or at night it is a wild and lonely place steeped in folklore and legend and is of course the sort of place were peoples imaginations can get the better of them, not to mention the fact that moor dwellers love to spin a good tourist attracting yarn. i will have a dig around and see if I can find any documented incidences to add to your thread. I intend one day to dedicate a thread of my own to Dartmoor phenomena because there is literally a ton of good ATS stuff concerning those three hundred and sixty five square miles of stark beauty, assuming someone hasn't beaten me to it.

Kind regards.

Telly's tale is surely compelling.

If these events are true…

When different people from all walks of life report the same thing in that spot over decades. People that never knew each other and were unaware of the similar reports about some otherworldly specter.

To most of them, the spook was an 'ordinarily' real person. I am one witness to several such types during my lifetime. Thats how I know these things are "real".

For what its worth…

Very late one night I was driving down the interstate and seen a dark shadowy figure walking. It appeared to be a man dressed in a long black hooded robe, he was very tall and thin. I slowed down just a bit to get a fast look and after I passed him I looked back in the mirror and he was gone! There was no traffic so I slowed down even more and looked out my back window, nothing! To this very day I wonder what that was! True story.

Frankinpillow, great thread subject -had never seen the Telly Savalas interview before so thanks for posting that one.

Apparently the M9 road near Uniondale in South Africa has also been responsible for quite a number of freaky (and similar) reports.

Uniondale is a small town in the Little Karoo in the Western Cape Province, South Africa.. In stormy weather on Easter weekend of 1968 a young engaged couple had a car accident on the Barandas-Willowmore road around 20 kilometers from the town. The woman, Marie Charlotte Roux, was sleeping in the back seat of their Volkswagen Beetle when her fiancé lost control of the car. The car overturned and she was killed.

The first reported sighting of a ghost matching her description occurred during the Easter weekend of 1976 and since then many other sightings have been reported. All involve a female hitchhiker who is given a lift, then disappears a few kilometers down the road, and some have reported car doors opening and closing, laughter and a chill in the air.

Cheers.

I did see a documentary concerning what some call "resurrection Mary". It has been said that she died in a hit and run accident. The thing that struck me was the documentary showed "...two of the bronze bars seemed to have been pried apart, and impressions of what looked like finger- and palm prints appeared on the bars" as a related article below states. It was clearly visible to see, in the photo they showed. The amount of force required to bend these would be considerable.

I was told a 1st hand account of a "hitcher" type of occurrence, by a guy called Alan, (the boyfriend of my ex's best pal).

It still gives me goosebumps when I think about it.

The four of us had met in the pub, and were just chatting over drinks when Alan started to tell me about a creepy road he had ridden down on his motorbike. He was riding solo on his bike, ahead of his friend who was also solo on a 2nd motorbike, when he entered a fairly sharp but flowing left-hand turn. He felt his bike shift a little, as if something heavy had moved on the rear of bike??
He glanced in his mirror and saw.... a slender figure riding pillion on the back of his bike!!
The figure had a white helmet on, and a different coloured jacket to his own (I can't remember the exact colours).
Needless to say, Alan got a REAL scare... so he hit the brakes and quickly came to a stop.
He rapidly whirled round, and... no one was there.
So, he started to question himself... WTF? Did I REALLY see that??? I couldn't have???

A couple of seconds later, his friend caught up, pulled to a stop beside him, and said:

"Who the HELL WAS THAT on the back of your bike??????"

Alans' jaw just dropped, as his friend accurately described the colour of the passengers jacket and helmet, exactly the same as Alan had seen in his mirrors a few seconds before.

He managed to get back on his bike and ride to a nearby pub, where they stopped to calm their nerves an try and make sense of what had just happened.
As they approached the bar, with their biker jackets and helmets, and pale, serious expressions, the barman said;
"You look like you've just seen the ghost of that biker girl who died in the accident..."

Apparently, a few years before, a guy had crashed his bike on that exact same corner, killing his girlfriend who was riding pillion passenger. Several bikers had since seen her "ghost" on the back of their bikes - usually around the anniversary of her death.

I knew by Alans' face and by his mood that he was deadly serious about this story, he looked visibly shaken - even though it had happened years earlier.

I have goosebumps again right now, just typing this.

Here's another very freaky account from Roy Fulton in Bedfordshire, England.

Could be wrong but I don't think the guy is making it up.

A recent account publish in 2011 which occurred in Newcastle, UK.

www.shieldsgazette.com...

It seems to be a world wide phenomena. Also there maybe natural laws, yet unknown to us, at play here, since these type of events have the same modus operandi. Also what is there purpose? A wake up call perhaps to a more in-depth reality?

Glad you posted this-the moment i saw the thread i thought of the "Spookmeisie van Uniondale" Heard about it since childhood (I'm South African) Instead of being scary,it makes me feel incredibly sad. I'm a mother,so i hate the thought of a child lost, whose spirit cannot seem to find rest.

This is a cool thread. Thanks for starting it.

I had a weird experience once. While it doesn't exactly involve a hitchhiker, I was on the road at the time.

I was on my way to work. The road I normally took was closed and I had to take a detour. The detour went by a cemetery. I was in no hurry to get to the building I was supposed to clean because the people there usually stayed late and I wanted them gone when I got there.

I was going slow, passing the cemetery, and I saw something standing on the other side of the cemetery fence. It was wearing a long black dress and a veil. I drove past and was so weirded out that I looked back. Nothing was there.

Mind you, this was during the day. The headstones in that section are about knee to waist high and the area was open, except for headstones that nobody could really hide behind, with no trees and I was going slow. Well, I was so freaked out that I stomped on the gas and got the hell out of there.

Imagine have something happening to you like in Riding the Bullet by Stephen King. Now that would be creepy.

Why do ghosts happen to wear the spookiest apparel possible??

If I become a ghost, I'll wear a skyblue suit and hat and a yellow tie and that killer smile!

For what it's worth, I also see the black gowned lady whenever I'm sick.

Well, it was in a cemetery. It could have been the ghost of a mourner.
