Pure oxygen as o3 is instantly fatal.

Batteries are really inefficient, the best solar powered system in our planet is plants, and we are nowhere near their storage and efficiency abilities.

Current solar cells systems only work with blue photons and that's why plants are much better harnessing solar energy, they work with more photon types as the red, which is more abundant.

This isn't true. The best semiconductor solar cells have a much greater photon-to-useful-work efficiency than plants.

Plants of course have the advantage of synthesizing chemicals and growing & reproducing on their own without requiring an expensive factory. Since plants and solar panels do not have the same objective it is not simple to compare them directly.

Here is one attempt (solar cells win): asunews.asu.edu...

I hear ya.

Stay tuned. We've really only just begun

This is great. While this particular technology won't necessarily be the one to change our energy consumption, the more people and the more resources commited to alternative energy, the better off we will be.

... Solar panels aren't new.

But the price is coming down at the same time as the efficiency (what percentage of sunlight is captured) goes up. That means the time taken for a system to pay off its own purchase and installation costs is becoming shorter and shorter. So it then becomes more economical for builders to install them when a home is built. Add on the concept of long-term energy storage, and all that power captured during the day could be used to heat both the home and the water boiler at night.

Eventually, it might even be possible to capture enough energy through Summer/Autumn to last through Winter/Spring.

I see much about lunar landings and the Chinese, a lot about Mars and a fair bit about Solar energy of various forms across the webs but none of you picked up on the old Irish joke about the Irish equivalent of NASA sending a manned spaceship to the sun, when queried by NASA experts about the dangers of immolation caused by the suns intense heat they replied; "sure, 'it's no problem, we are going at night"!

Just thought it was all getting a little intense and speculative...

well if you split H2O, what do you get?

Didn't some guy named Tesla invent something? What ever happened to his inventions?

S&F for finding and sharing. I love hearing about these discoveries but when they keep vanishing after a few years and you don't see the new tech come out it is disheartening.

Great find OP!! Now, if science can get these into homes before the government gets all the SMART meters up and running, maybe we can make the government pay us for electricity instead of the other way around?

Are these even being offered commercially? What would the retail price be?

Are you sure? I had heard that when a person smells O3 on the ground, that lightening is going to strike in that spot. Usually O3 is in the atmosphere, so it would be odd for a person on the ground to smell it, but how would anyone know what it smells like if they died right when they smelled it? Do you have sources for your instant fatality theory?

How lightening produces ozone - OZONE PRODUCTION FROM LIGHTENING
