Speaking from the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation forum in Chile, President Bush warned Iran over growing concern that they are preparing large amounts of uranium for enrichment. International concern has grown out of reports that Iran is aggressively producing uranium hexafluoride gas leading up to the November 22 stop date it recently negotiated with European countries. The gas when spun in a centrifuge will separate pure uranium that can be used in both energy and weapons.

SANTIAGO, Chile (Reuters) - President Bush on Saturday warned Iran of growing international concern over reports that Tehran is preparing large amounts of uranium for an enrichment process that can be used to make nuclear weapons.

This is a very serious matter. The world knows it's a serious matter and we're working together to solve this matter," Bush told reporters during a meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi in Santiago.

The two leaders were in Chile for a summit hosted by the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation forum.

Bush was referring to reports from diplomats that Iran was aggressively producing uranium hexafluoride, or UF6, days before a Nov. 22 deadline by which Tehran promised the European Union that it would freeze enrichment and all related activities.

Iran has stated that it has not speeded up production. However, one has to wonder if the reports are true then why is Iran doing this? Its pretty clear if this is the case then the persistent claims that their nuclear program is for energy are false. Part of the deal includes a light water reactor and the fuel needed to run it. The only other reason they would want enriched uranium is to make weapons.

With economic ties to European countries most notably France (why is they always are in the mix) and China along with a highly ineffective and anti-western United Nations general assembly lacking the will to refer this matter up to the security council its a wonder the Iranians feel empowered to do as they will in respect to nuclear proliferation.

I don't by any means begrudge them power generation (questionable as the need seems) but to have the terror supporting mullacracy in control of nuclear weapons is foolhardy on all the worlds part.

As the cold war ran down I had hopes that the risk of nuclear weapon use was reduced, now with third world political aspirations getting mixed up with proliferation issues I see a time not far off that a city or many gets instantly obliterated due to these selfish policies. When the terrorists get the bomb there will be no chance for deterence to work for it will not exist other than as a blind retaliation against percieved enemies. Any moralistic tit for tat will die an ignoble death in the blind rage to follow.

Alas Babylon.

Iran isn't scraping its' enrichment program. They are just stopping until
such time when they *need* to continue.

The UF 6 is used to optimize operation of their available centrifuges.
They have said when their power reactors need the fuel then they will
resume. The agreement does not affect scientific research into UF 6, so of
course to be in compliance with what they have agreed to do they naturally
want to obtain enough UF 6 so they won't be in breach of the agreement
after it goes into effect.
