A Utah man is refusing to eat until his state restores a ban on same-sex marriages.

Trestin Meacham, 35, has been surviving on water and the occasional vitamin pill since Dec. 21. Although he's already lost 25 pounds, Meacham claims he won't eat until all of Utah's counties stop issuing gay marriage licenses.

...

"You can start a blog and you can complain on social networks until you're blue in the face and nothing will happen but actions speak louder than words and I'm taking action," Meacham told 4Utah.

One day before Meacham began his fast with "no end in sight," federal judge Robert J. Shelby ruled that Utah's ban on same-sex marriages was unconstitutional.

Now this is an interesting one. This guy is trying to go Ghandi over recent rulings regarding same-sex marriage in Utah. Usually I would say that hunger strikes are a very noble way to get your point across, however this time I think it's pretty stupid.

I think it's safe to say that he doesn't quite understand how the constitution works based on his argument:

In particular, Meacham is pushing for Utah to "nullify" Shelby's ruling. The principle can be traced back to Thomas Jefferson, who argued that the state legislatures have a right to nullify federal statutes that are unconstitutional.

Meacham believes Utah doesn't need to enforce Shelby's ruling.

The problem of course is that same-sex marriage isn't any less consitutional than any other marriage, so it can't be "nullified" by the state. A better argument could be made, and was made by the supreme court recently, that a "ban" on same sex marriage is a violation of the 14th Amendment.

I'm not sure what this man hopes to do with a hunger strike; hunger strikes have only worked in the past by big social figures who people actually cared about. If this guy thinks that he's going to get any more than a little chatter on the internet, then he's grossly mistaken. This is obviously not going to cause people to budge on legal practices and certainly won't have people change their minds on any of their views.

Either way I fundamentally disagree with him from the core of my being, on both a legislative and social level. It's kind of sad to think of the level of social brainwashing being pushed in some of these religious sects; it's apparently enough to get this guy to stop eating altogether over something that otherwise wouldn't even affect him at all.

This guy will starve to death.

Gay marriage has absolutely no affect on those who strongly oppose it. It seems that narrow minded people with dogmatic religious views and those with deep hidden issues about their own sexuality are the ones who get all worked up about it.

I am even okay with polygamy too. It is already happening and those families and gay couples deserve some of the legal rights that the traditional married couples are entitled to.

Why does this guy care so much? I just don't get it. Who gives a flying hoot who marries who? Does it impact his life in some way it doesn't the rest of us? Now if the state starts forcing people to marry whom they pick then yes stave away. God people like this make me want to puke....

In Utah? lol...

May he RIP ..and not all 50 states have quite the same way of thinking on matters.

* To clarify that ... having them change back would be like hanging a hard U turn with an Aircraft carrier. Such a short term stunt (life needs food) isn't wise when the ship of state probably won't turn again at all.

That is something you don't see often a whining 35 year old child. Unless I get what I want I'll starve myself the idiot deserves to starve.

He will break, if only in secret. No way will a human with two brain cells to rub together is going to willingly walk into death by starvation when the moment of truth comes. It's an ugly way to go, I hear.

How much did he weigh at the start of his fast? If it was 300 pounds we have a way to go before this bigot pops his clogs.
I bet he will cave in and come up with some excuse or when he does die he will get a right telling off from God for being a *ick and will come back as a gay man who gets persecuted by idiots just like himself.
Either way the state will not say "OMG this man will die lets ban it again".
Idiot.

This seems to be a case of 'I'm going to thcream and thcream and thcream until I'm thick'. This prat seems to have no idea that the world does not revolve around him. Hopefully he'll stop starving himself once he realises that no-one cares. Apart from Phil Robertson perhaps.

But starving is so slow and painful.

I wish he would just hold his breath, really.

Is there an update since December 21? It's only 14 days, and that's like a good cleansing fast. I did 21 days once, and was walking miles near the end of that, so it's doable but I wouldn't suggest doing it. This fellow is taking a vitamin, and I hope he's megadosing on powder Vitamin C mixed in water. And at some point someone should rescue him, because this one's going for the long count.

And anyone is very welcome on my ongoing thread about the Utah gay marriage ruling, the more the merrier as updates come in. I linked this thread to that one as well:

Good. Maybe he'll die of starvation and the world will be a better place with one less intolerant redneck missing from it. I don't like gays, but those who think to regulate what two adults do in the privacy of their bedrooms are chaff and need to be removed from society.

This is the update, actually. The article is from Jan. 3 -- yesterday.
