From December 5 began a seismic sequence between San Casciano Val di Pesa and Greve in Chianti in the province of Florence, Italy, a swarm which currently has more than 399 quakes.
The majority of them occurred 19th (176) and 20th (117) Dec,
largest a M4.0

ikimaps is the best way to view them interactively
when the map opens, drag the map a little bit to the left and the yellow M4.0 will show on top of the rest

I assume ldeo doesn't use M?
Their numbers are higher than useless!
Looks more ominous when they are all in one list too!

I was just thinking about Banda Ache today too!
Ten year anniversary coming up.
The spattered perking has me going...hmmm!
I hadn't even seen Italy!

Merry Christmas everyone!!!!

LDEO are Ms which is usually higher than Mw or just plain M

I was looking for the data on Sumatra for comparison and Geofon had 7.2 for the M9.0, they never changed it.
Same with the North of Macquarie Island GFZ had 7.0, not 8.2
The data I used in the end came from ANSS.

I went looking for the Chianti quake, after I seen it on GFZ, usually a 4 in Italy has a lot of aftershocks, so I went to INGV, but I was surprised when it was showing a 8 day swarm.
There was another 4.1 this morning, San Giuliano di Puglia, Campobasso
cnt.rm.ingv.it...
only 2 aftershocks of that.

I see Gubbio is still doing its nut, I started a page on the Gubbio valley but never completed it after Google changed the Mapping setup. 18 in the last 24 hrs. May be worth finishing that as an animation been going on for 4 years now.

when an earthquake hits and takes out the power, it is a good idea to have this around. youtu.be... Yep, just make this a bit larger and attach pulley's to and attatch to a generator or alternator and .... Electric power. Yep.

I got some new Pins for Christmas

As I mentioned before, the colour orbs/markers I have been using for the last 3 years don't work so well with static images if there are a lot of them, so I've had to come up with something better. Have kept the same colour scheme, but they are a bit darker, they are scaled also. Just experimenting right now. This is part of the the Gubbio, Umbria series which has been going on since March 2013 when it broke out in the NW of the Gubbio Graben, east of Citta di Castello.
The images run through each magnitude then they are combined.
Google Maps can stick their New My Maps up their a_ses, I'll be animating everything from now on.
I'm using 4UMaps as the background for this one, it has the terrain, without the darkness of Googles Terrain.
right click "view image" for full size

I will probably be scaling the icons on my NZ maps from Jan 1 2015, you can see the difference in the following images.

old

new

The scaled sizes of the pins make it much easier to understand, at least for me.
Thanks Muzzy, and Happy Holiday season.

Good, that's the goal, to make it easier to understand. Its especially handier if you don't know the colour key.
You have a great New Year olivine

See what you's think of this layout.
I may have to change from 3D icons to circles to be able to see clearly defined icons.
tauhouanga.blogspot.co.nz...
I have done 1929, 1930 and 1931 as an experiment.
Click on the Flipcard view option then go down and click on 1929, 1930 or 1931.
Blogger has come a long way since the early days.
I have changed all my early NZ years to this style now.
Further work required to make them scaled down as the magnitude drops for other maps.
The pins I used on the Italian map the other day go all fuzzy on NZ Topo map or are hard to see on Satellite view, so I can't use those.

Enough on that, spent too much time on this, suffice to say after considerable experimentation I'm going to stay with the current icons, but am changing to Blogger using the NZ Topo skin to show the interactive maps.Wordpress is too constrictive.

some decent sized quakes yesterday.
