The First Amendment says that Congress cannot make a law that infringes on your right to speak. It doesn't say anything about your employer.

All of those apply to Robertson as well.
Bigotry is bad for business. If he wanted to stay on TV, he should have been smart enough to keep his mouth shut. But, a stupid Redneck's gonna do what stupid rednecks do.
I find it disgusting that anyone would defend this guy but, xenophobes of a feather I guess.

This guy is the classic demographic under fire in this pathetic country. It's now hip to discriminate against

White

Conservative

Heterosexual

Males

I actually agree completely with this. It used to be hip to discriminate against blacks, women, gay people, fat people, handicapped people... It's just their turn in the barrel.

See my last post on the previous page.

As to reality TV, I have no time for it. This is the only one I have watched. The "characters" speak to and entertain me.

I don't care what anyone says Phil Robertson is awesome and he has strong values and should be able to stick by them and say what he wants.

Freedom of speech!

Don't get biblical? Really? Phil Robertson used the Bible as the source of his hatred.

edit on 19-12-2013 by PixieWizard because: (no reason given)

...as the source of his definition of sin, in which he was asked to answer directly.

No hatred, only defining sin; two very different things.

God Bless,

I suspect he could care less what people think about him and thinks even less of being on television. He is independently wealthy and doesn't need A&E's money. I don't think it will be a problem for him.

Ah, you're talking about the REAL version of the 1st, not the perceived one that everyone is concerned with now. You are correct BUT that is not what is being parlayed in today's political arena.

Well, let's use this popular misunderstanding of the term then. Even by those standards he was not denied free speech. He said what he felt and people responded in kind. Some people support it and some people don't. A&E cut him off because they don't want to be associated with that. That's not denial of speech, he can still say whatever he wants but he can't say it on A&E. The man has no intrinsic right to say what he wants anywhere he wants. If he came to my house and spewed that garbage I'd be well within my rights to toss him out.

Free Speech doesn't mean speech without consequences.

Hatred is leftist-speak for Refusing To Revere!

Caving in to hysterically sobbing leftists only encourages their fascism, its identical to giving in to a child's tantrum.

Leftists must stamp their feet and howl, which when taken seriously and NOT laughed out of existence, is destruction to common sense.

He said nothing hateful, he only failed to fawn over depraved evolutionary dead-ends, which is a greivious thought crime to ridiculous leftists.

I think Phil is getting hammered for things we are not talking about here. He said something along the lines of a man should prefer a vi##na. Like what a real man should want. Stuff like that. LOL

I don't know why America cares what these people say or do? I have much better things to waste my time on than watching these guys. The show IMO looks horrible, maybe one step up from Honey Bo Bo.

Networks and cable co's spend fortunes to try and stay ahead of the ratings curve. They full well know the mind set of Americans.
Advertisers put their spots on shows that have good ratings. And as that great conservative H L Mencken said..."no one ever went broke underestimating the taste of the American public"

I think this thread has confirmed it....

Okay .. I"m kinda caught up. Kinda interesting ...

When Martin Bashir spewed disgusting crap about Sarah Palin .... the right was very unhappy and called for him to be fired and the left thought it was 'free speech' and he should be left alone.

Now this duck guy honestly answers a question put to him .... the right think he has a right to free speech and that he shouldn't have been fired and the left is unhappy with what he said and are applauding him being fired.

Well, you nailed it. People only want people fired when it offends their side. Personally, I would have fired Bashir and I don't like Palin either. That was just a tacky, ignorant thing to say. As for Phil, I think i'd have to weigh the numbers. I doubt too many gay men are hooked on duck dynasty, but Mad Men and Walking dead also air on the channel. A boycott could come and I wouldn't want to be parted with my dollars.

So are you saying that everything said, all the stereotypes made about blacks, gays and women were correct to begin with?

First, there is no "intolerance" here.

No intolerance here...

And yet somehow we are including religion in the debate (read the thread, please). What political party claims tolerance and then reacts in very intolerant ways to any opposition?

No intolerance here...and yet some of us cannot accept the fact that he expressed an opinion and claim to be "offended" and "victimized" by his words, rather than just shrugging it off.

I do not claim to be tolerant. I do, however, support his right to express his OPINION without fear of retribution. I have that same right, IMO, as do you.

I will repeat: I cannot stand the program and do not watch it. I am dismayed by the feeling that it's ok to punish those who say something that is not PC.

I would like to point out that most of this thread (and most of the noise on the internet about this story) is people of the more conservative persuasion stomping their feet, whining and howling about the fact that Phil got fired... They're offended, pissed off and they're going to do something about it. They're taking their ball and going home. They're crying like babies.

As I said before, whenever something like this happens, the majority of people have to take a side, making one the villain and one the victim. You are as guilty as what you accuse the "hysterically sobbing leftists" of being.

Do you also support employers rights to hire and fire depending on what there employees say that reflects on their business.

Since when did it become intolerant to speak your mind? If offends someone then that's on them. Phil could have been more blunt are really said something offensive, but he didn't he was somewhat passive in his statement in my opinion.
