People often complain about lack of social mobility when there is one very easy solution. Do not watch a TV program or film or buy a product, where the star or owner isn't state educated. OK this is difficult to do with products but with tv shows it would be easy. Just support those people who didn't have an automatic card to success. So for instance any film starring a star who is related to another star would automatically vetoed and would not watch it.

If people spoke with their wallets people would not want to lose money and would hire people from back grounds more like you dear ats reader. We would get better films and tv programs and more social mobility. There would be more people to speak up for most people.

I dont own a TV so be easy for me

I dont think its their education thats the problem, its the people who pay them!! and if you were to replace those well educated rich stars with poor uneducated people it would be even easier for tptb to influence them.

Its the people BEHIND the curtain that are the problem.

I think it would be a good way of adding some fairness back into things. The privately educated and even more so the rich and those related to stars: cannot be trusted to act morally on their own. The nature of these people is to favour themselves above better candidates. I cannot see another way of making things fairer.

What is the option having more and more hollywood dynasties, and also in other areas. How the hell is socual mobility going to occur under these circumstances. No people need to use their wallets to make it happen: by not watching or buying these things.

I'm not following this in the least. Please help me understand.
If I'm reading this correctly you are stating first, that everyone needs to be state educated?
Second as far as entertainment goes, we shouldn't watch TV/films that have stars related to other stars?
And somehow this equates to social mobility?

I didn't get a gig drumming for a band that the trumpet player from Cake was in because of who I was related to, it had to do with my hard work.
I didn't get to work with Harvey Korman and Tim Conway because of my relatives, again it was because of my hard work.
If you want to make it in entertainment, you have to be exceptionally skilled. If you want to be famous you have to be in the right place at the right time, as well as skilled.

What does this have to do with social mobility?

Oh, so are you saying that my husband and I shouldn't make a ton of sacrifices to try to send our son to one of the best private schools in this city?

... because I really don't trust any of the school districts here any further than I could throw a 10-ton boulder.

I mean they're a mess. You have one without state accreditation. The state supreme court ruled students can transfer out of it and it has to foot the bill. Now you have the surrounding districts suing it and it's suing the state, and why on earth would I want my child in any of those schools?!

Am I completely missing the logic of why you would only watch things with state educated actors? Even if you could find such a thing out why would you care? This just makes zero sense.

This is literally the silliest thread I've read on ATS yet. I have no idea what your point is or how you assume the entertainment dynasties limit social mobility. Heck it's not even humourous.

So you are pretending that nepotism (shock horror) doesn't exist? Of course it does and it stops many other better people from getting on. As for any gigs you did or didn't get I do not know enough about you to say. But are you really saying that most stars who are related to actinng or other dynasties are NOT there because of their connections?

Are you saying that Nicholas Cage being the nephew of Francis Ford Coppola hasn't made his career?

And as for private schools, why should you be able to bribe your kid into a better future. Certainly in terms of ther most expensive schools they aren't about education is eton really that much better £33,000 a year better? No. It is because it is a really big bribe to make sure they succeed no mater how crap they are.

Lets not pretend that many things aren't littered with corruption and nepotism. It says a lot about the world that I am classed by some as the odd man out for wanting to fix things and make the world less corrupt.

Let's change things and get rid of some of the arse wipes in society. In the uk they do ubcredible damage: as they do everywhere. The real dregs of private schools end up in the civil service where it is impossible for them to get sacked because of their background. Some of these people end up running hospitals etc...

Surely there has to be a standard set somehwhere is it will just get worse and worse. Then one day you will see a film with a star who is a severely retarded inbred number one F*CKUP but related to many acting dynasties.

Yes for God sakes don't stop the gravy train for those whose parents could either A pay a big bribe through elite education, or B whose relatives practically own the show, or film.

So...do you want to be an actor? If so might I suggest that your time would be better spent studying your craft,
taking acting lessons, volunteering in a theater, working as a background/extra so you know your way around a movie set, and writing your own screenplays etc, than whining on a web site.

My efforts are now beginning to pay off quite handsomely in the movie business, both as an actor and director/producer.
No family member helped me. You can be successful as well! Why the crybaby attitude?

For every actor you are complaining about; there are hundreds of people on a movie set that worked their ass off to get where they are; both cast and crew.

With today's technology, anyone can make movies. The indy film world is incredible!

I do not and never have wanted to be an actor. There are plenty of easier ways to be unemployed. Joke well sort of. In fact unless connected then even if you end up on tv and films you still san not end up that well off: aparently all the cash goes to the star. I would imagine the best way to make money out of acting is to fail at it and teach drama.

The point is to add fairness to society. Or is that that there are too many people( I use the word loosely) who spend their sad lives buying magazines hanging on the word of stars. I mean some people even vote for someone because a star they like says they vote for them.

OK I watch TV and I see myley cyrus and I can appreciate that because she is naked most of the time: and I know that she has conectiong in music through her father. But then again she is naked although she doesn't seem to have much in the way of breasts, and it does occur to me that a good non connected porn star would probably be better. lol

Nopotism is bad. It really is that simple. It keeps more talented people out.
So as it is bad the lets stop it. What is so contreversial against that.

Worse case scenario without nepotism there would be a young woman with t#ts swinging on a wrecking ball.

I watch very little TV. Mostly all I watch is a few minutes of news here and there and I do (admittedly) have a soft spot for a few History Channel shows. I know Pawn Stars and Pickers are just as bad as anything else but if you have to watch something, you might as well enjoy it.
