I'm having problems when logged onto the family desktop. For some reason, the computer won't let me star or flag posts and, just yesterday, when I tried to post a pic in the funny pics thread, I got into my album alright but, couldn't get the pop-up of the pic with the codes on it to post in the thread.

This only happens on my family desktop (which the kids probably have full of viruses and spyware) which runs off of Windows 7 and uses the latest version of Firefox browser. My laptop (pretty much same set-up) doesn't have these problems but, I usually check ATS while eating breakfast at the desktop before leaving for work and it's getting kinda old.

Does anyone have any suggestions of how to fix this problem?

I am also having problems posting no matter what computer I'm on (even my computer at work). The screen freezes for about 5-10 minutes whenever I hit the POST REPLY button. I saw an older thread with a Firefox fix for this type of problem, tried the fix and it didn't help much. This is REALLY cramping my style as I've usually cooled off or forgotten what I wanted to type by the time my computer comes back on line. Its been like this since ATS 5.4 went online.

Here's a screenshot of my Task Manager. You can see the CPU usage skyrockets the second I hit the REPLY button.

Help please.

The slow-downs in Firefox when posting a reply can be alleviated by disabling "hardware acceleration" in Firefox. Directions to do that are in my post here:

www.abovetopsecret.com...

I've also noticed that sometimes when Firefox updates, it breaks things or makes Firefox run worse. So, I always back up my Firefox profile, create a fresh, new one, then port over my bookmarks, settings, etc.

It's also always best to have multiple browsers installed to test issues with. I would test your image issue with another browser. Chances are, there's a setting in Firefox being overlooked, or the installation is corrupted enough that Firefox needs to be reinstalled.

Firefox is working quickly and perfectly on this site with zero issues.

All you have to do to get flags is post a thread somewhere. I'd be glad to give you your first if you ever decide to make your own thread.

I have no problem receiving stars and flags, its giving them while on the desktop that's the problem.

That's the fix I tried but didn't work.

Do you think reloading FF will fix the problem? If I have to do that, how do I save my settings and bookmarks and stuff for the reload so I don't lose everything?

This may be simple but...you DO delete your browsing sessions and cookies right? And you dont leave your computers turned on all the time day-in-day out? And stay signed in at ATS always?

If so...delete your cookies. Turn off your computer after using it. Sign OUT of ATS when session is done. Sign BACK IN when you go there the next time.

Just tryin' to help. These three steps can fix some issues by letting you start from scratch with your browsing sessions.

I do log out of ATS every time I get done and I shut off my laptop after every use. The desktop does tend to stay on a lot as it gets a lot of usage and doesn't get shut down often. I did have to do a restart recently for some updates and the problems didn't go away.

I probably should delete my cookies more often but, that makes ATS go into light mode and the GO DARK button takes a long time to kick in.

BTW, I logged in on IE and, while there is some lag in posting time, its not nearly as bad as when using FF.

Are you having problems with any other site?
Has your search engine in the top right corner changed lately?
Homepage change lately?
Have you updated Java and Flash lately? (If not, you should)

Also, you might consider trying Chrome and see if the problems persist.

That's the fix I tried but didn't work.

If you're still experiencing high CPU usage with Firefox after disabling "hardware acceleration", then you likely have an add-on or plug-in causing your problems.

The best way to tell is to put Firefox into "safe mode" by going to "Help / Restart with Add-ons Disabled / Restart".

If Firefox runs better, then you have an add-on or plug-in causing the problem. If it doesn't run better, then it might be time for a reinstall.

Making a new profile is pretty much the same as a reinstall. You can read the following article about how to manage Firefox profiles:

support.mozilla.org...

Or you can just do a simple uninstall/reinstall.

FortAnthem
how do I save my settings and bookmarks and stuff for the reload so I don't lose everything?

First thing to do is back up your current profile which is at:

C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles

Your main profile will have random numbers and letters with a ".default" at the end like this:

s9d8sfdls.default

Copy that folder to your desktop to back it up. Once you've backed that folder up, you can uninstall and reinstall Firefox, or create a new profile in the profile manager.

To port over the files you'll need for bookmarks, settings, etc. you'll have to take a look at this article which tells you what files to copy over from your backed-up profile to your new profile:

support.mozilla.org...

Any other questions or help, feel free to ask.

ATS is the only site I'm having problems with, although, its also the only site I post stuff on.

My search engine hasn't changed, nor my homepage (a sure sign the kids uploaded a program they shouldn't have), if they do, I always try to find the latest program uploaded and delete it if it looks iffy.

Flash was updated lately but, I always ignore the Java updates. As soon as I update it, there's ALWAYS another Java update waiting in the wings (literally as soon as I finished the latest one) I don't have the time to constantly update that damn program but, if you think it might help...

Not a fan of Chrome. I'm too used to FF and I've heard of some weird spying issues with Chrome.

I can't use Firefox on ATS at all. Its made be adopt chrome as a default browser. Same issue, CPU jumps to aburd usage as soon as I hit post or reply. Hardware acceleration doesn't fix for me neither.

Only in ff. Strange. And only on ATS.

My setup win8.1 rtm, latest ff, 6gb ram... Crappy CPU, but meh better than before with no issues...

Then your issue resided in the Firefox install being broken by an update, or an add-on or plugin was causing your problem. Could also have been a problem with malware or low machine specs. Either way, here's a screenshot with your reply in the background. You'll notice zero CPU usage:

Once Firefox is freshly installed and "hardware acceleration" disabled, Firefox runs super-fast and buttery-smooth on every website including ATS.

If its low end specs or an addon I use it makes no difference, chrome with the same addons runs fine, and reply or post on ATS using ff turns it into a slug, making it unusable. Basically something in the new ATS breaks something in firerox across many users experience and no where else. Vanilla ff might as well be ie. Oo

I'm not buying a new CPU for ATS either. (But happily accept donated i7's for the cause

I did reinstall ff with only greasemonkey installed but no change. Living without that is no option. Tapermonkey in chrome is fine..

Still strange, and im not the only one.

Thanks for all your help, I'll try tinkering with some of that stuff over the weekend.

Do you have any suggestions for my S&F problem? Might it have something to do with a pop-up blocker (which never seems to work BTW)?

I got so blankety-blank sick and tired of FireFox, I gave up on it.
I keep it updated in case of an emergency, but it's pretty much useless.
The big screw-up came when they rolled out FF25...or whatever major number they're now on.

I had the freezes, too, but with 25, some features stopped working....like 'Paste and Go"

Some addons, too.....tried uninstalling, etc. no good.

Found Pale Moon browser....it's works off of FF, but is faster and better....and a smaller community.

I loaded it up and it still takes a little while to open a new post but, not as long as with FF.

Do you know of any quick ways to transfer all my bookmarks and stuff to the new browser?

I use windows 7, but I use ie, I also had problems for a few days when I tried to flag and tag, after ATS did its transition.

I found out that the problem was not ie, but that I am very bad when it comes to security and while browsing in my tools "the accelerators" I downloaded some extra security that would stop some ads that I didn't want to have running in the background in ATS, like google ads, but it came with side effects, and no been able to tag or flag in ATS was one of them.

So I disable the "tracking protection" and now I can flag and tag, sadly this is not a good thing when it comes with security and tracking.

I hope it helps.
