U.S. to boost Israel defense missile funding by $173M

U.S. lawmakers have approved boosting funding for Israel's missile defense program by $173 million in fiscal 2014 as the Jewish state's military establishment draws up a new defense doctrine to protect cities from Hezbollah's growing missile arsenal. The Jerusalem Post reported that Israeli military intelligence now believes that the Iranian-backed Lebanese movement now possesses around 5,000 long-range missiles that can reach Tel Aviv, the country's largest conurbation, and carry warheads packing between 1,300 pounds and one ton of explosives. On Monday, leaders of the Senate and House of Representatives Armed Services Committees unveiled a cut-down defense authorization bill for the coming fiscal year that would boost U.S. missile defense spending by $358 million to $9.5 billion. The legislation also authorizes additional funding of $173 million for joint missile defense projects underway with Israel.

Once again our government throws money to the welfare nation of Israel instead of using this money in our nation where it is needed. As long as there are hungry and homeless people in America we shouldn't be giving a dime to anyone. Why doesn't Israel tell all of the millionaires and billionaires that live there to step up to the plate and pay Israels bills instead of Israel begging money from other nations. It is sick to think America spends more money on Israels defense than Israel does. It's time to vote out the Israeli agents we have in our government that puts Israel before America.

With the Israeli's getting into bed with the Saudi's, shouldn't the Saudi's be putting up the money instead of the States? Also with all the wealthy banker's etc holding dual passports, shouldn't they be spending some of their money on Israel as, presumably, were things to go badly and we all copied Iceland's actions, they would be rushing back there to avoid prosecution - same as the man who stole from the Print workers in the UK Maxwell.

This is sickening and it has got to STOP!!! While we're going bankrupt, their little friends in congress just keep handing them more and more US taxpayers money. These people are lunatics. I call for drug tests for all in congress. There has to be a root to this behavior. No more aid to any countries. Its interesting because while European nations are going bankrupt from their domestic welfare states, the USA will go bankrupt due to our foreign welfare state...

Why do we have to give Israel money? They already have a lot of money. The common citizen there isn't that rich but the government itself is very wealthy, they probably have more gold than the US has. Well, I suppose any country has more gold than we do. unless the US is holding it for them.

It's a small Cost Of Living adjustment...

You're absolutely right and Israel is a special case anyway since they and Egypt are both under unique agreements that are intertwined and cannot be cut unilaterally without hell to pay all around.

The thing is, as you note? We have money going out, in just military aid, to almost every nation in the world. Literally. The USG has spreadsheets of this, going back to the 40's and one row per nation. Over most of the 20th century, it was sporadic and you saw money out to who you'd expect among allies. Now? I believe I saw even Tonga and Fiji getting military aid in a small amount when I'd looked.

ALMOST every nation on Earth takes and needs our money...I.E..is beholden to us...I.E..we can manipulate.

I love how money can buy anything in this world, but how about they work on buying some stability and long term hope for THIS nation, eh? Everyone BUT us..with OUR money.

This is a funny misconception from America, I dont know were you guys got this from?

Norway, Sweden and Denmark the countrys with some of the best public services and welfare are far from going bankrupt, they have a very sustainble econemy.....

Now Greece, Spain, Italy ect who are going bust? Well thats down to corruption miss managment and Germany crashing there econemys through the Euro.

Europe is not one big place, with one single problem. It a collection of many diffrent nations each with there own issues, Greece is not Norway and Spain is not Denmark.

Some of Europe has Issues, BIG issue but at least get the cause right!

Seriously though, the whole premise of this missile defence system is flawed anyway. If the alleged enemy were to launch large salvos of these alleged missiles, Israel could not shoot down enough to make any difference.

And anyway, who can blame Hezbollah for having things to throw back at Israel if attacked? See, all this constant bleating by Israel and yet Hezbollah are NOT doing anything provocative or attacking Israel, they just want Israel to keep the hell out of their land, which is perfectly reasonable to any right minded person.
Far from being the self proclaimed victims, Israel is time and time again the aggressor and seemingly immune to international law and the same human rights standards we have invaded other states for breaching.

You are right. Part of the peace agreement between Israel and Egypt is that America gives Egypt 1.5 Billion a year. How could America get suckered into paying for another nations peace?

I find it ironic that Israel has a national health care system; much like Obamacare that US citizens help pay for.

Great news and was also great news when Obama confirmed his support for Israel during his interview with the Chairman of the Saban Forum.

I'm kind of at a loss for what to say, I have run out of excuses for what used to be a great nation and I'm left to face palm in solemn contemplation of what America used to be instead of what it is.

Every bone in my body loves the ground that I walk on, every heartbeat pumps blood that ensures me every day that I am an American and that I believe in what we did to found and justify this land as a nation.

With that said, I can't honestly justify the actions of this government, this administration or the one before it. I with all honesty don't believe them to be American because it has been proven without doubt that the agendas, the laws and the dictation coming from our federal government are not only in gross violation of our Constitution but also in the very spirit of American values.

It is a very sad day and I fear the days from this point on will only produce further sadness. I don't think our government is by the people for the people and I don't think that our government has our best interests in mind. I think we have been hoodwinked and that we have been sold out and I think that the rapid pace of our transformation is at such an accelerated pace that we may all find ourselves left without a chair when the music stops.

Disinformation, manipulation and conditioning has been an art of war for centuries but where we used to drop leaflets from planes, we can now just pump it in on televisions. When you have limitless funds furnished by overtaxed worker drones, it's a small achievement but oh, oh so effective. I fear the worst is yet to come and honestly, coming soon.

For once we find ourselves in total agreement Buster. US should not give Israel or anyone in the M.E. one red cent. The M.E. will come unwound and Israel will be attacked by its neighbors. Without the support of the USA Israel's only option will be to launch its nuclear missiles. That will pretty much end the problems over there. Think Israel would not launch if they were in danger of being over run? Why?

I do not like giving away money anymore than you. Are you ready for the consequences of cutting off all funding? It is rational to believe it will be messy. Without US support Israel will be attacked and if attacked the M.E. will be a mushroom cloud. Why would this not be true? Is this what you support?
