While archbishop of Buenos Aires, Pope Francis was reportedly known for sneaking out at night to feed the homeless and distribute alms to the poor. Now some are wondering if he ever quit.

When Krajewski was asked if Pope Francis had ever accompanied him on one of his evening trips, the Polish archbishop grew silent.

“Next question, please,” he said with a cryptic smile

Why did he need to "sneak out" to help the poor at night? They didn't help them by day?

Sincerely puzzled...

It wouldn't surprise me at all. I'd bet he does.

Side note - Pope John Paul II would sneak out and go skiing. Every so often someone would discover him on a ski slope ... dressed like everyone else. He loved to ski and it was relaxing for him.

I'd guess he's still going out, maybe in street clothes and a wig or good hat or something. Wondering if he may have a couple of non-obvious bodyguards trailing behind him. He doesn't seem like one to want to stay cooped up like a fragile piece of crystal, so more power to him (literally).

Why did he need to "sneak out" to help the poor at night? They didn't help them by day?

Cardinals (and, by extension, the Pope,) are somewhat held hostage by their office.

Let's face it, if the Pope showed up at a soup kitchen at noon to ladle out food, there would be a ton of attention, cameras, and cynics to say "oh, look, the Pope is having a photo op!"

But if it's his passion, as it has long been, to quietly help the poor as best he can, he'd definitely "sneak out" and contribute his time off the clock of being Pope. I don't know if you've had the experience, but I have, and being a servant to those who can never pay you back can be a deeply spiritual and uplifting experience, and I can't blame the Pope (or anyone, for that matter,) for wanting to do that as much as he can.

He would better help the poor by stripping all the gold out of the churches and give it to the people. Religious people sneaking about at night to help people? lol sneaking about in the dark. hmmmm

If he did that, there would be people complaining that he was part of a New World Order conspiracy to drive down the price of gold.

There's just no pleasing some people.

I'm not catholic, but it is easy to see Christ's love shine through this man in a beautiful way. He is an amazing leader.

As to why he would sneak out at night ... Christians are taught that the best kind of giving is done in secret. If your giving is not secret, that's fine... but your rewards for the giving will be here on earth. (Earthly accolades.) If you give in secret, your rewards will be in heaven. I don't think this Pope is giving with the idea of wanting rewards, though ... he is giving because he is filled with genuine love and compassion for people.

Would`nt it be better if he did it in the day time and set an example for the worlds religions? Sneaking about in the dark is for demons and evil types. Hidden secret gifts? lol jesus didnt hide or sneak about in the dark so why should gods main man on earth do it? He should be proud of doing this sort of thing after all that is what this jesus the rabbi did. No sneaking about like some kind of snake in the grass.

He's doing what Jesus said to do, in the way that Jesus said to do it.

“Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.

“So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. (Matthew 6:1-4 NIV)

I was going to respond to your drivel, but Adjensen (as usual) beat me to it and did a better job than I would have.

The only thing that I can add is that if you don't think that the Pope is currently doing exactly what you say he should be doing during the daylight, you need to do more research.

I truly don't get people that condemn positive actions by the Church, the Vatican or the Papacy. It does a disservice to their other legitimate arguments when they condemn actual perfidy that the Church is involved in.

damned if he does and damned if he doesn't???
No. This is HIM ... himself ... and he's doing it out of the limelight from love in his heart.
If he did it in front of people then people would just say he was doing it for self glory.

LoL!

I laughed inside when I heard this on the news this morning!

I love Pope Francis, he is a most wonderful servant of Christ and a true example of faith to all the brethren worldwide!

John 12:26
If anyone serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there will my servant be also. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him.

Galatians 5:13
For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.

Mark 10:42-45
And Jesus called them to him and said to them, “You know that those who are considered rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. But it shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

As far as I can recall about jesus he did all his stuff in the open. When he fed the thousands with a loaf of bread and a few fish? That was not done in the dark hidden away? Or curing the blind ect that was hidden away and done in the dark? or the other so called miracles they were all hidden and done out of sight?

As I am not very religious and dont really like those types of people. Opium of the masses ect. Killing for the gentle lord jesus. With their onwards christian soldiers type of things. Killing for jesus? lol That sounds like a good holy type of person. Almost as bad as those muslims. If you dont believe in my gentle kind loving god I will blow myself up and kill you. lol When I think of this guy there was nothing very holy about him. The church says his woman was a harlot? So he was a pimp? Did he not rob people in the temples? Throwing their money to the gang in the crowds? A thief? A pimp and a thief? No wonder they crucified him. If he was alive today he would be in jail.
Then we look at all the wars and deaths that he caused. hmm what a nice guy.

What Christian says that?

The church says his woman was a harlot? So he was a pimp?

Jesus didn't 'have a woman'.

Did he not rob people in the temples? Throwing their money to the gang in the crowds?

No. He didn't rob anyone and he didn't give other peoples money to 'gangs in the crowds'.

Your post is extremely ignorant of the facts.
I suggest you actually read the documents before you post any more foolishness.

You obviously know next to nothing about Christianity or the Bible, why do you keep talking about it like you do?

Jesus left that place and went to the vicinity of Tyre. He entered a house and did not want anyone to know it; yet he could not keep his presence secret. … After he took him aside, away from the crowd, Jesus put his fingers into the man’s ears. Then he spit and touched the man’s tongue. He looked up to heaven and with a deep sigh said to him, “Ephphatha!” (which means “Be opened!”). At this, the man’s ears were opened, his tongue was loosened and he began to speak plainly.

Jesus commanded them not to tell anyone. But the more he did so, the more they kept talking about it. (Mark 7:24,33-36 NIV)

One of many examples of Jesus doing things that he didn't want others to know, or talk, about.

Christians never said they would blow them selves up. I didnt say that. You read what I said then accuse me of saying that chrisians said it. Now you are saying that he didnt have a woman? So the church is lying? wow.
Seems to be lots of lies in that fairy tale book that was written by MEN not some gentle loving kind spirit in the sky.

Ah so he did do things out of sight. Perhaps because it was not the truth? A bit like a guy in the crowd at the theater who pretends not to be in on the scam?
