MORE than 60 Iraqi policemen were kidnapped as they were returning from training in Jordan, one of only two men who managed to escape the ambush said today.

The policemen were staying in a hotel near the Jordanian border in western Iraq, when they were attacked on Sunday by a group of up to 20 armed men, said the policeman from the southern town of Karbala.

I wonder if the insurgents are trying to defer new Iraqi police recruits, or simply taking the fight to a weaker opponent?

either way it's sort of a win-win situation.

The Iraqi policemen were put in place by American authority, so it would seem to me that this, as well as the fact that they are a weaker opponent is why they were kidnapped. Id like to see them try and kidnap 31 armed US Marines

Again? Again these recruits weren't protected when they were being transported? First its a bus load going on holiday, unescorted, now it happens again? This is outrageous. How can they expect anyone to join the iraqi police if they can't be protected while they are being -trained-. I could understand if they were already trained and armed, then they'd be able to defend themselves, but were staying in an unfortified unprotected hotel?
