See as I'm a black man, I'm afraid that if Martin Luther King had done something like hang a flag upside down and had signs saying Impeach Kennedy, I'd be using a black only bathroom and shopping at colored stores today. He would have been labeled crazy and not gained the popularity to accomplish the tasks that he was able to.
It's unreasonable to consider that these people are in dire distress or duress when they obviously are sitting at computer screens and can afford internet to even post in these forums. They are not captured, tortured, or even stuck on a rooftop as water is 10 feet high. That is a reason to turn your flag upside down. I guess these people can't even remember to story of the boy who cried wolf.
This symbol is an insult to me as a veteran and my military comrads. I too would refuse business and/or disassociate myself from a person that tried to justify this by a non-existent hardship.
AlienScience
Exactly.
They claim they are in distress because Obama is President...it's just one more ridiculous act in a long string of ridiculous acts by the Obama haters. We have had..."He's a socialist", "He's a communist", "He's a Fascists", "He's gay", "He's the anti-Christ", "He's a Muslim", "He's a Kenyan", "He's a terrorist", "He's a dictator"...along with all the idiotic acts people have done such as the failed motorcycle rally, the failed trucker protest, the tri-corner hats, the gadsend flag, "Nobama" stickers...and now this...an upside down flag.
The only distress these people are in is that I think they have finally figured out that they are a small dying minority that no longer hold much influence over this country. They are old, they are outdated, and they are in the minority in their antiquated thinking.
The good thing is that this is just their final death screams...and that is why they are so bitter and desperate.

Dont you think the tea party and republicans are playing their poker hand the wrong way? I mean they look desperate lately and dont even accomplish anything. They could accept that obama won, take the good with the bad, and wait till next year this time to vote as many senators and representatives out as they wish.
Voting does mean something. I dont believe the vote count is rigged. This isnt ethiopia yet. Its just that people vote according to their mainstream beliefs influenced by msm. There are many candidates and parties to choose from IF they want to.
By the way, I am sorry for the lose of your daughter. Its never easy for the family and relatives.edit on 28/10/13 by EarthCitizen07 because: (no reason given)

The United States government can be as obtrusive, overbearing, and downright distastefull as it wishes to be and can demand supplication from its citizens, all while still flying the same flag, unchanged in appearance or symbol.
burdman30ott6
It exists in its present state to demonstrate that, no matter how close to being the "bad guys" the US gets, no matter how many of our traditional morals the US violates, and no matter how many of the principles the country was built on get trod upon, the symbolism is there and along with it is peer pressure to constantly start waving the damn thing back and forth.
burdman30ott6
So what happens? As soon as the water starts getting too warm, some event, conflict, or disaster occurs and immediately the flag is waved rapidly back and forth and like lemmings Americans go into patriotic mode. I'm sorry, but celebrating the flag doesn't equal patriotism any more than wearing a crucifix equals Christianity or rooting for the Sooners equals being an OU alum. Equally speaking you can be a rabid Patriot, a devout Christian, and a graduate from OU with honors and never once celebrate the US flag, wear a crucifix, or give a flip about a Sooner game.
WATERLOO, Iowa — Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, D-Ill., said he will no longer wear an American flag lapel pin because it has become a substitute for “true patriotism” since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
He commented on the pin in a television interview Wednesday and then again on Thursday at a campaign appearance in Independence, Iowa.
“My attitude is that I’m less concerned about what you’re wearing on your lapel than what’s in your heart," he told the campaign crowd Thursday. "You show your patriotism by how you treat your fellow Americans, especially those who serve. You show your patriotism by being true to our values and ideals. That’s what we have to lead with is our values and our ideals.”
He had been asked about the pin Wednesday in an interview with KCRG-TV in Cedar Rapids.
“The truth is that right after 9/11 I had a pin,” Obama said. “Shortly after 9/11, particularly because as we’re talking about the Iraq war, that became a substitute for I think true patriotism, which is speaking out on issues that are of importance to our national security.”
Obama was campaigning Thursday on the third day of a four-day trip to the early voting state.

Like I said before, I seriously hope and pray that all the brave men and women from our military who have fought and died over the years offered their lives for something more concrete than some colord fabric sewed together. I say that because I believe they fought for something that was a hell of a lot more free with a much deeper respect for liberty than the USA circa 2013, and last I checked the only thing that flag represents right now, today, is America in the present day.
The reason why I only partly sympathize with you, is that like many other conservatives
I am convinced that you are one of those people that assume anyone that calls out those facts is automatically Democrat or a staunch Obama supporter
I bet you watch Fox News and eat up all the misinformation that Glen Beck and Sean Hannity spew.
I for one think your situation is funny and just as I support your right to display or talk about your political views, I support that car lot's right to not sell you something.
- President Obama did not adopt the country's current NSA policies or procedures. The NSA, CIA & other agencies with high security clearances have violated the constitution since their inception. To ignore that is well, ignorant.
This country is no more in distress than it was under Nixon, Reagen or Bush. The only difference is that we have the internet and information spreads like wildfire.

I'm sorry, but I respectfully disagree.

"The American people will never knowingly adopt Socialism. But under the name of 'liberalism' they will adopt every fragment of the Socialist program, until one day America will be a socialist nation, without knowing how it happened." Norman Thomas
(1884-1968) six-time U.S. Presidential candidate for the Socialist Party of America
[Ed. note: Norman Thomas and Gus Hall, the U.S. Communist Party Candidate, both quit American politics, agreeing that the Republican and Democratic parties by 1970 had adopted every plank on the Communist/Socialist agenda and they no longer had an alternate party platform on which to run.]
I'd wager my devalued dollars that you would likely advise your son/daughter NOT to marry a minority. Yes, I went there.

I like your post. After much thought and participation in this thread, I just can't swallow it. It just does not feel right to hang the flag upside down for a protest.
But,you and I are in the minority here, I think. This is a ironic statement. I was born in Mississippi, a poor white girl in 1951. I remember the separate drinking fountains, bathrooms, sitting in the back of restaurants. I remember in the first grade passing the school bus with the black children. I remember it all. I also remember, my house did not have indoor plumbing and no heat. I lived with my grandparents then. As I grew I use to wonder, who the heck am I? I left the South when I was 14 and it was a real culture shock in the 60's but glad it happened.

Ok. So here it is 2am and instead of waking up thinking about how to get through my day, here I am because of you. I'm convinced. You seem to have all the answers. I'm in. Where do we start this change? Unless it is just a line of BS and it is all about going after the president, or gays, or abortion.
I am good at writing letters. How do people like us who have disabled dependents even get out of the house to cause change?
