I am just wondering when we will see another pyramid shaped shadow in the sun>!

I stopped at spaceweather before coming here this evening. It's kind of impressive. I hope it keeps going. The sun has been so boring for the last few weeks. We need a couple of X20s back to back with another filament eruption.

I guess I just want to see some colorful northern lights from my house without having to go down to Lake Superior at night. I'm not in my 20s anymore, when I was younger I'd have been sitting at the lake watching the lights with a six pack and friends.

Well, 2008, 2009 and 2010 were the low point of the solar cycle. We're in or near the high point, and will drop back into a low again, as it's happened before.

So, you're right that sunspots have been increasing since 2008/09. They've never reached the high level of the last cycle around 2000 though.

Now just to keep a little doom porn alive, it can be noted that the Sun could throw us an X-50 with absolutely no warning and no lead up. It probably will some day too. It's just longer odds than winning the Powerball Lottery, several times in a row, for it to happen in our relatively short lifetimes. In my opinion, anyway.

Ohh wait X-50? Its a doom!

X-50 is the range of some published estimates for the 1859 Carrington Event. That is when Venezuela enjoyed the Northern Lights and the Solar event which spawned it was bright enough to be notable by people on the day side of Earth, with the naked eye. It was a whopper of a popper, so to speak.

It's also estimated at a 'Once in 500-Year' event, if I'm not too far off on my memory. So, by the historic record in things like ice cores, we should be okay for a period well past our lifetimes in seeing another one like it. (at least we hope, right?)

Lets say we are out in the sun, when these events occur... are they (radiation storms, cmes etc) harmfull for us?
could we feel the sun hotter? like burning our skin or whatever... Or Earth protects us no matter what and
it doesn't affect us at all?

and what about the ozone hole? is the sun more dangerous during its peak?

Sorry for too many questions but I would really appreciate some answers

Not sure if this is related but our whole town lost power last night around 9PM and about an hour away my mom said they lost power. I asked 2 different police officers what happened and they said they had no idea. We also heard a loud explosion about a second after everything went black.

Nop ..

Nothing similar without strong X solar flare or strong filament eruption ..

For now there is no new M flares but very probably will be soon ..

www.swpc.noaa.gov...

First CME is expected to arrive in next hours, 3-8 hrs ..

We have strong EQ M 6.7 EAST OF SOUTH SANDWICH ISLANDS, also think probably more strong EQ's will come in next days ..

My only problem, sometimes, with solar flares is they blow my mind. I can wake up in the morning, and from how I feel physically and mentally, I know when one has erupted and gotten to earth.

A major X-Class solar flare peaking at X1.7 was observed around new Sunspot 1882 this morning at 08:01 UTC ..

Not Earth directed, also M 1.0 ..

Greetings everyone!
I was thinking the same thing buddy, makes me wonder if in time the earth will heat up, we all know in 10,000 years or more the sun will have expanded slightly. i wonder with M class flares rapidly hitting, if it will heat up the planet. you would think anything coming from the sun would be really hot. i would look forward to no more winters he he he (^_^)

Not only another X flare but the sun is intensifying. Spaceweather is saying the X flare might be part of a global eruption.

Solar Flares and EQ's are directly related?

Is that an opinion or a scientific fact? Or an opinion based on fact?

I didn't know there was a direct correlation...and am honestly curious.

Solar flares and CME's are only one of ~10 different influences for possible stronger earthquake, I wrote that many times ..

This influences need to be accurate calculated and similar ..

Sometimes yes sometimes not related, depends on many others things ..

If solar flares or CME's and EQ's directly related even kids would make accurate EQ prediction ..

To make accurate EQ prediction is very difficult or very complicated, it's one of hardest human challenge but I think we will succeed in future ..

We just need more time with this present technology etc ..

Also that's reason mostly way people in past have failed to predict strong EQ's in majority percentage etc ..
