Radio 2 have just announced on the news that the USA have agreed to temporarily raise the debt ceiling.

Does anyone have any other news on this? I can't see it anywhere?

It's been reported in MSM for at least an hour or so now for a Boehner deal being in the offing. Sounds like he folded. Given that this was the outcome? Why did we go through this, again? So much hate, discontent and anger across so many people ...for, what? I'm missing what was accomplished here.

Politics... Bahhh...

Normal operating procedures becoming a flaming crisis
when political hay can be made against the president.
Whose fault is that? Did Reagan have problems raising the debt ceiling?
How about the 2 Bush presidents? Nope. This game is played when the
GOP wants to take the ball and go home, rather than play by the rules.

Did Ronald Reagan line up armed agents to block access to open air memorials by threat of arrest and force?

Did George Bush Sr. shut down public highway turnouts at Mt Rushmore so even looking upon the mountain becomes as difficult for sheer spite as it can be made?

Did Reagan shut down 1100 Sq. Miles of a bay that only covers a bit over 400sq miles as it's shown on the map? (A lot of ocean must have been 'assumed' as under their Jurisdiction and not Florida).

I don't think there is much comparison here because of the petty, mean spirited and outright childish crap tossed in just to squeeze normal Americans to the max. Americans with NO control or influence over the system. Obama was pissed at Boehner and punched Jon Q Citizen. The man has issues... BIG issues.

Having said that, so does Boehner and strictly from the position of Constitutional blame? Boehner bought the majority of this mess by HIS own actions, not Obama's. Obama made GREAT use of this.....but the Speaker of the House was the man with the power to end it since the shutdown began, IMO. He's chosen not to....for absolutely nothing gained in the end.

The great Republican rollover.

Spineless move, I'm furious.

Obama stood firm, they caved...

I'm sick of it! I was excited they were standing their ground, then they do this.

I'm still trying to find a valid source for this. Literally all I have heard is the newsreader on Radio 2 mentioning it at the end of the broadcast, in a one liner.

Please don't take this as gospel news. They may well be mistaken in which case, mods please delete this it it's erroneous.

If true though, what was the point in all this theatre.

Never issue a threat you're not prepared to carry out. Never bluff unless you mean it. And you can never lose a negotiation you're prepared to walk away from.

No need to search high & low, it's out there.

House GOP to offer short-term debt deal

WASHINGTON — House Republican leaders are proposing a six-week increase in the nation's $16.7 trillion debt ceiling as a way of avoiding a first-ever U.S. default on debts.

If there is enough support within the party, the House could vote as early as Thursday evening, according to two GOP sources familiar with the plan. The sources declined to be named because the plan had not yet been endorsed by the Republican caucus. Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, proposed the plan to the full Republican conference Thursday morning. The plan would extend the debt ceiling to Nov. 22.

We'll see how this goes. It hasn't even been fully backed by the party yet.

Not entirely. I had the same initial reaction as you, then I read the whole article. They're offering a 6 week, bare bones ceiling increase. That's it, the government will remain shutdown until Obama gets off his ass and does his job and, if that doesn't happen before this 6 week increase expires then I reckon they default. There's some intelligence to doing this, to be honest. First and foremost, it really does put the onus on Obama. Second, it gives a bit of separation between the shutdown and the debt ceiling. Finally, to be honest the GOP hadn't made any demands regarding the debt ceiling EXCEPT for balancing the budget. The ACA demands were tied into the government shutdown, not the debt ceiling. Providing 6 weeks of brass tacks ceiling room may actually help them a lot, especially if Obama reaches that "new" ceiling in record time as he has in the past.

The shutdown has nothing to do with the temporary raising of the debt ceiling. As long as there is no cr for appropriations to fund the government going forward, the shutdown will remain regardless.

Debt ceiling deals with money already spent, not future appropriations.

No. But the TP/GOP sure did! They continue to cheer it...They hold the purse strings that pay for those places to remain open, secure and policed...and BTW the deal is NOT to re-open Gov. ... Just to raise the debt ceiling and only for 6 weeks so we can have another crisis for the holidays. The TP/GOP refused to re-open government...again...so no deal there anytime soon. How many federal workers and contractors are missing mortgage payments? Credit card bills? How many businesses reliant on tourism are suffering?

I am curious why you think that the President signs the checks that fund government? It is Congress that holds the purse strings and it is the GOP House that has proudly shut down government.

Right...so we can return to crisis in time for Christmas....Stellar...

And the GOP is finally doing what the Dems have been demanding..Agree on a budget..

A separate resolution would appoint Republican negotiators for a House-Senate budget conference committee, which Democrats have demanded for months.

It's over. Obama just said Obama would likely sign clean debt limit extension.

Republican's caved.

What the heck was the point in shutting down the government if you don't have a backbone?!?

I'm furious, that weak kneed Boehner really screwed us all.

Really? Excited that the shutdown may have shaved a good 1% or more off you economic growth at a time the USA is in fragile recvover? Excited you could have defaulted and been reduced to 3rd world cesspol?

No...they were excited that they might get to finally use the guns and food they have been stockpiling...

Don't worry TP...you'll get another chance in 6 weeks...and the Gov. is still shut-down, but the end-game does not involve the end-of-times as hoped, but rather the end of the TP. Suicide by voter...this kind of stain doesn't fade in 12 months, the Chamber of Commerce, Wall-Street, hell...even the Koch Brothers have abandoned the TP.

I'd just like to take a moment to point out that, when attempting to insult someone else's intelligence, it's probably not a great idea to do so with a post containing a confusing sentence with no fewer than 5 spelling errors and 2 major sentence construction flaws. You sort of stole your own thunder, friend.

Typeing very quiclky on a touch pad phone.
Maybe ATS should make typing on a touchpad platform easier?

But fact is anyone who defends the shutdown and possible defualt of the USA is a idiot.

All your doing is deflecting my very valid point.

Every day your goverment is shut down your econemy is slowly going backward. A defualt would be game over for the USA. Do you really wanna end up like Greece?
