This is a bummer for the porn industry but it happens every few years.
There was an outbreak a couple of years back as well, but I don't remember if it was HIV or some other major STD, but every time it happens, it is another "Should of used a condom" moment.

Although when watching porn, condoms can be an eye sore, the stars should be wearing them anyways.
It's just common sense and at the same time promotes safe sex.

To keep it really simple.. I care so much because porn, as an economic force, IS so much. It's a taboo topic in polite conversation but as an economic force, it surpasses all others and by a large margin.

Today’s jobs report showed that America’s labor-force-participation rate is at the lowest it's been since 1978, but the disappointing "jobs added" numbers might be in part to blame on August's porn shutdown. The Washington Post’s Wonkblog points out that the motion-picture industry lost a staggering 22,000, or 6 percent of its total jobs, during the month, which included a weeklong halt in porn production after performer Cameron Bay tested positive for HIV.

Porn is such a powerful influence in society at large that it strongly influenced (not controlled..but sure influenced greatly) the move not only between Blu-Ray vs. HD-DVD, but between the Original Betamax and VHS formats (Beta was superior for several reasons..but that didn't help). Now before 10 people jump on that, I am clearly noting it as a major factor..not cause and effect. That debate has raged since the Beta format tanked, and it's no one cause...but economics of dirty movies played a big role.

Add to that, and more specifically? The unemployment rate for Los Angeles in July was 9.8%. This isn't a healthy or happy job market by ANY stretch. It cannot afford to lose ONE job. It needs to be adding them by the thousands, without a month's loss of momentum, for what amounts to a year or more, just to start feeling like they're doing okay.

So indeed, with so much of my family still in the L.A. area, it is something I take interest in for more than purely academic curiosity. Anything to hurt the overall Porn industry, hurts the economy ..whether people want to admit that ugly truth, or not. It's just THAT big a business. California cannot afford to lose another one after buggering it's agriculture management in so many ways.
