Porn actor Cameron Bay, boyfriend Rod Daily and two more porn actors have HIV; call for more tests/ex]

Porn actor Cameron Bay tested positive for HIV in August, sending fears through the industry and prompting a moratorium on porn filming in Los Angeles.

Now it has emerged that four porn actors have HIV, as filming is set to resume on Friday despite the outbreak. The actors have criticised the new tests every 14-days and are urging the industry to require condoms to protect workers.

I don't mean to be overly critical, but what peep show reel producer was she working for? I've.. umm.. heard rumors to the effect that.. errr.. Porn actresses are attractive. She kinda got hit with the ugly stick. Over and over.

I thought they meant an outbreak among the high level porn stars.. Not the truck stop DVD level?

This is definitely a terrible thing happening
I heard about this awhile ago (not the most recent developments), but about HIV-positive porn actors coming forward.

It was something I wondered about YEARS ago....something I would be WAY to afraid of, if I ever considered doing porn (I haven't). I wondered, "How do they KNOW the people they perform with, don't have STDs?"

Of course, we all know they are required to show papers....but I wondered how effective that really was? How OFTEN do they show papers? I mean...sure...showing papers might help, but there needs to be more steps involved in protecting the assets (actors).

The porn industry started out as a VERY shady business...and in many areas it still is. On the flip side, in many ways standards have been raised, and the industry has grown in a positive direction. I DEFINITELY think condoms on set should be *required*. I get it, no one wants to see condoms in porn, but it just isn't worth the risk (at least I wouldn't think so).

Sorry if my PC meter isn't in perfect calibration. I grew up out there. I knew people in the porn industry when I did. No one special or that anyone would have heard of, but people to have heard how it works and what life is actually like. Not very glamorous... I just can't find sympathy though and she, in particular, doesn't look like she EVER had attractive looks.

I didn't realize she was personally behind the recent law passed on condoms, as the article suggests. What that changed was where many operations are going to work. So, it changed nothing at all in many cases, but the fact California will lose yet more revenue the state desperately needs right now from what many have measured to be the most lucrative industry on Earth and in Human history. The figures are just breathtaking and above everything else. Off it goes to other states as many other stories are reporting......and that's the person largely responsible? Interesting... I hadn't seen her before.

Porn industry like all sex work industries has a lot of abuse and problems. Many of the women who are in the industry, like other types of sex work tend to come from abusive backgrounds. This definitely adds to the problems of STDs and drug abuse that is widespread in the industry. Also many of the women are trafficked and the ones that aren't more often than not are in the position of prostitutes not willful porn stars.

Here's an interesting site with information: www.fightthenewdrug.org...

I don't really see any solution as the majority of customers aren't fans of condom usage. The only way to battle it possibly more frequent testing and drug counseling(I'm sure a lot of the HIV infections are from intravenous drug users as well).

www.nydailynews.com...

I read an article that said she was filming a s&m type film her breast was injured and welled up, bad enough to go to the hospital... because she tested positive , it may never be fixed. She said something bad happened on the set, and they didn't stop filming...but she wouldn't say what...

the article i linked says that one of males she was filming with got a cut on his penis and they kept filming, that must be what what she was referring to.

hope no more test positive..,.tough business to be in...

she was working for kinks.com

I'm sure I read that she was also 'escorting' on the side.
It's a horrible story but like many of said, play with fire you will get burnt.
This should be an eyeopneer for people who pay for sex or at very least have sex with other loose people.
Looks mean nothing when it comes to STD's, no one is safe.

I was reading somewhere that sex industry is very clean for brothel prostitution because its health regulated . condoms, screenings.

Its unregulated sex without screenings or use of protection.

That's why they are crying cause they were being made to carry out porn shoots without condoms.

I may not agree with the existence of porn, and I may believe that the manner of person who would seek to earn money by such means probably needs a bloody good slap, and replacement parents at the very least, but that makes this story no less tragic.

If an industry must exist which revolves around the act of physical intercourse, the sharing of various bodily fluids, then appropriate measures must be taken to ensure the bacteriological and virological safety of all participants. And for the record, appropriate does not mean affordable, convenient, easy, or quick. In my opinion, if there has to be an industry based on smut, moral decay, the total abandonment of decency and proper decorum, then it ought to be so tightly controlled at the clinical safety end of things, that not even a light cold can be shared between participants in its activities.

I mean, look at the simple fact of the timing of things here. It can take less than a second for some STD's to transmit from one person to another under certain circumstances. There are 1,209,600 seconds in a two week period. So even assuming the most questionable behavior on the part of the persons involved (i.e. getting drugged up and screwing for the entire time, using various stimulants to ensure constant wakefulness and physical capability to perform), that means that for every one of those one million, two hundred and nine thousand, six hundred seconds that they are NOT being tested, they could have contracted the disease.

Now, a test for every second of the day would not be possible physically. But given that there are versions of the HIV test which can be administered, processed and results obtained in about half an hour, there is no reason what so ever that tests could not be done every time the actors enter or exit the movie set, other of course, than the fact that doing so would probably require more money being spent on infrastructure. But there again, if the people who run these productions are going to ask the people who are starring in these movies to risk their long term health in such serious manner, I think its on the production houses and the industry as a whole to provide a bullet proof system for looking after their actors.

I can't dig up any sympathy. Seriously .... you screw around with multiple partners day after day ... having unprotected sex ... and you know there are killer diseases that make the rounds by doing that. This is one of those 'DUH!' moments.

I do not recall asking for sympathy but I do love the whole "I, a stranger on the internet am well connected and in the know" preface before defending yourself against something I never said. You can doubt she ever looked attractive all you like. I commented on your actual comment, not every other existential thought you might ever have.

Where?
Right now if someone offered me money to have sex on film, I would jump at it. Actually finding a place to even apply is getting harder and harder and I would really like my mom to keep getting her anti-rejection medication. Sure, there are better ways to make money for some. No one becomes a prostitute for the glamour.

So...

prostitution = illegal

porn industry = legal

The difference? A camera is present.

Regardless, the porn industry is as legitimate and important as any other. My wife and I have been known to put on some porn while we are getting caught up.
So? 20 years of marriage, we can do whatever the hell we want!

That is how a lot of prostitution works on things like craigslist. They simply imply it will be for a film and voila, it is porn and legal, not prostitution anymore.

I'm genuinely sorry if that is how you interpret what I said. I don't mention my life experiences or what I may have done or seen in relation to a topic for some superiority points or some such thing. It's to give some reference as to how I came to whatever conclusion the topic is dealing with. I respect and look for that personal context from others, so I have presumed it's appreciated in turn. Hmmm... Maybe not.

No... I was replying to the comments and the thread. It's a story I read quite a bit about before ever seeing this thread on the matter, had already formed an opinion I spent a bit of time looking into, and so then shared it when finding a thread on the topic. Many seem to think the discussions on a story are somehow limited to what an OP chose to show for the event...when many of us are reading these things in depth, outside ATS and as often as not, before making a comment here on anything.

The new piece your story gave was the connection between that person, the condom law and who was the driving force behind it. That was, as noted in a previous post, a connection I hadn't made to the face before. Now that was valuable to know. So....a whole industry is in chaos and various stages of leaving California entirely or changing operations entirely...because she thought it should be that way. Her and some others, to be fair. Yup.... Busy Body activism. That's about the norm anymore...and A LOT of people were BADLY hurt beyond any documented AIDS cases from this one for what she's done.

* Outside of the 2 members of the "talent" portion, as it's referred to...there are a hundred more working lights, cameras, catering, security outside and everything else to make a film production set function. She didn't just impact the lives of the people being filmed...she screwed all those other people too (Not literally, I'd hope), as Porn leaves the over-regulated state and I doubt those who leave ever come back. That hurts A LOT for a state already DEEP in the red and where Porn was a major industry supporting tax revenue of all kinds. It's money they can never replace at this stage.
