Okay, I have seen you make this unbacked claim all over these boards now. While I wish I could believe you, I'm nervous to a point where I called my local representatives for the first time ever. I only have a limited understanding of world history and a quarter century of experience, so maybe my fears are elementary but can you or anyone please explain how based on tensions of past that nothing will come of this? I see people twice as old as me say they've never seen anything so serious, but maybe it's just because they're sensationalists venting on ATS. Please give me some peace of mind, but only if it's realistic. I prefer the truth.

Well this thing is not made for combat that is for sure. I doubt the Chinese would send it the Med unless it was to evacuate foriegn nationals if the conflict expanded.

It's similar to the USS San Antonio that's already in the region. It's not really a warship in the sense that it doesn't fight other ships like a cruiser or destroyer. China is actually smart to send it. They can sit there out of the fight all day, recording signals, gathering intelligence on communications, radar systems, and all sorts of things. This is an intel specialists wet dream.

Then, I'd stop and think again about the fact Iran has no need, desire or intention to be a blue water Navy. Their whole focus in life has been about defense overall, and control of one spot on the surface of the Earth. A very small spot and a shallow one, as it happens.



A unique place, requiring a unique kind of boat to operate there, if that is it's exclusive domain. They were actually quite intelligent about the design, given their overall intentions for battle in the Strait, if it ever came to that, IMO. They'll lose a bunch of them, but then, that literally IS the point....so it's brilliant, actually. I've never underestimated the Iranians/Persians. Historically, those who have? Generally have fallen hard because of it. Syria and Iran being inextricable, like peas in a pod here to all sides.

To say that ASW in the Gulf is difficult would be one of the biggest understatements ever. Active sonar is next to useless at those depths, and passive sonar works just a little better with all the crap in the water. Throw in a diesel electric submarine, and dear god it gives me nightmares just thinking about it.
