U.S. Pays $1.5 Mil to Help Brazilian Women Quit Smoking

A Brazilian-born researcher who runs minority health programs at a public university in Alabama has convinced the U.S. government to give her $1.5 million to help women quit smoking in her native country.

A noble cause indeed, but likely not on the high list of the American taxpayers funding the project. Nevertheless, the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the nation’s medical research agency, has given the Brazilian researcher, Isabel Scarinci, a five-year, $1.5 million grant to fund her international tobacco-control project.

Quit wasting my damn money

I see sequestration isn't slowing down government stupidity down one bit after the doom porn spun by the administration how the world was going to end if we cut spending.

While 1.5 million may seem like change to most people that in itself is most damning of it all. Have we become so apathetic to government spending these days?

Every cent counts, Every dollar counts because that all adds up considering that is taken out of your pockets Mr. and Mrs America.

Then they turn around, and tell you to give them more. They don't ask,. They Tell you to.

It costs absolutely nothing to quit smoking other than will power why we are funding that is beyond ignorant.

I'll be forced to agree with you on this one Neo.

I do not like American money going to foreign countries. Why we do this is insane.

I don't think that it's in our best interests to buy our friends.

Course it wouldn't hurt to cut our military spending down to a reasonable level either.

Look, I love and respect women. Brazilian women especially. And I fully support programs that will help improve their health (they should also be voluntary programs). However, those programs should be funded by their native country. Brazil's government should fund this program, not the U.S.

Why should our tax dollars be spent on a program that is aimed at another countries citizens? Our tax dollars are spent on enough frivolous programs as it is. That 1.5 million could be better spent on Americans who desperately need it. Our homeless and injured/disabled war vets for example.

America: Helping Brazilian women quit smoking by day,and funding terrorist organizations by night.

HoHo....

thats fantastic.....just fantastic...

Makes you wonder, are they trying to bankrupt us on purpose so hard times CAN call for drastic measures.......?

MY thoughts on the matter and general feeling towards my government when I hear about things like this.......

Go die. No seriously. Go die, or get the hell off my planet.

I dont want you to live here anymore....

So tell me again why you have to raise taxes?

The Obama administration has made minority health a huge priority and has funded projects accordingly through different federal agencies, including the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) as well as the NIH, which annually doles out north of $31 billion to hundreds of thousands of researchers at thousands of universities and institutions around the globe.

I always get a chuckle out of people who say this about everything they see government spend money on. Exactly how much money do you pay in taxes that it is YOUR money every single time they spend it?

Is there anything government spends money on that you agree with...maybe the Military? If so, then how about think of YOUR money being spent on that. I'm sure the amount of federal income tax you pay is fairly insignificant when compared to the military budget...so just think of yourself as buying some ammo for the soldiers every year.

I would rather not have my money spent on death and killing, so I don't like the government spending money on the military. But I do like programs like this...even if it is on non-US citizens, I know...shocking. I don't care where someone lives, I'd rather my money go towards improving someone's life rather than killing people.

So look at that, it's a win-win, you can have your money go towards whatever you like and I'll have mine do the same.

I think war is a HUGE waste of Money too. I say close down all the bases. Many people that know me here on ATS will tell you Ive been saying it for years. It might not be something my friends on ATS want to here but its what I believe in, and they respect my opinion.

I think all Politicians are liars. You might be surprised on how alike we might be.

This is waste. 1.5 million could be used here.

Can you say.....kickbacks!

How in the world do people enter political office as middle class citizens and become stinking filthy rich over a few years while supposedly serving the American people? Just a cursory examination of www.opensecrets.org... will have your jaw dropping........(although, that website has changed a bit from what it used to be---almost like they're trying to lessen the shock of it all.) Open Secrets

"I'll give you the $$ you want for your little pet project. Here's the account number to deposit 10% into." (I guess I'm becoming much too cynical, as year after year, I watch the free style spending of OUR $$ by politicians on projects that boggle the mind.)

I always get a chuckle out of people who say this about everything a Disgusted American
has to say about Taxes, and a Corrupt Government gone out of control.

They always want you to play mental gymnastics around the Truth
about How Americans are Being Screwed without much of an Option,
and then are told to
Shut up complaining
and just Suck it up like a good Patriotic Tax Paying American Zombie to the System Should.

And where does it say in the Constitution
that my Voice in Government is Measured by the Amount of Tax?

I am held into extortion to by Insane Politics and Codes of "Law" that only benefit the Elite.
Thank you Kind Sir or Madam I do NOT Wish to think my Tax Money goes to buy Bullets.
Bullets that Might very well and soon be used on Myself and my family and friends.

This is NOT What America is, and your attitude sounds very familiar to me as a sound of contempt for where other Americans are in this Horrible time for our Nation.

Shame on you, you obviously know not what you speak of regarding America and our Tax system.
It is Time for a Change, and I won't be satisfied with Imagining Some 'lofty' realm my Tax money might go,
I want to know and Keep It HERE to HELP AMERICA FIRST.

Sad Sad Sad attitude about your fellow Americans,,
I assume it is out of a misguided belief that Our Government
( Not the FORM OF GOVERNMENT, but the One we have physically in place)
is a Benign Entity that Cares for us like a Father of some sort.

Nope We got BIG BROTHER,, NO Way to make it Less than That.
