The sun is gearing up for a major solar flip, NASA says.

In an event that occurs once every 11 years, the magnetic field of the sun will change its polarity in a matter of months, according new observations by NASA-supported observatories.

Apparently this occurs every 11 years, but this is the first time it will happen after the Earth entered into the other side of the galactic plane, December, 2012.
Not at all sure what, if any, significance it has.

There have been reports in the alternative media that the polarity of the Earth's magnetic field may flip at some time too, and that would have a major impact on global positioning communications, compasses, and who knows what else.

The current solar maximum is the weakest in 100 years, experts have said. Usually, at the height of a solar cycle, sunspot activity increases. These dark regions on the sun's surface can give birth to solar flares and ejections, but there have been fewer observed sunspots this year than in the maximums of previous cycles.

As far as Earth's position to the Galactic Plane we are about some 30 million years of crossing that. In relation to the Sun we cross the Galactic Equator about twice a year. In 2012 it was remarkable because the crossing occurred on the winter solstice. However, the position changes so slowly, 1 degree per 72 years, we have been apparently crossing around the solstices for a dozen years or so and will be in that position for another dozen - nothing too remarkable except for being a handy measuring point. Another approximately 2160 years we will be in the same position again on the solstices, but a little closer in our 30-odd million year wait to be in the Galactic Plane.

Short and sweet, the galactic plane is the plane where most of the galaxy's mass lies and depending on the orientation you can end up on one side or the other.

Bootsy Collins is KNOWN to have dramatic impact as to the orientation of any celestial body in the galactic plane! ;-)
