Wasn't sure in which forum to post...hope this is the right place.

I keep an eye on earthquakes as I live in the Pacific northwest. I have a new phone and reinstalled my earthquake app on Tuesday. I thought there was something wrong with the app or that USGS was offline as there were no earthquakes in California. Here we are at Monday and STILL NO QUAKES.

I know from having monitored quakes for the last few years years that California has many QUAKES all the time. Obviously none of them are very strong but there are always SOME QUAKES.....so what's going on?

I don't want to be all doomy but it seems really unusual and it makes me feel uneasy....

Maybe some sites are phasing out alerts for anything under a magnitude of 2? Or just glitches in the systems ?

Something must be wrong with your app. There have been plenty of eqs over past week.

That whole scene is 'underground' now..

Sorry, couldn't help myself.

I don't now much about EQ's, but I remember being told that during periods of no quakes, be them mini or not, that the fault would be gathering pressure or something like that.

Maybe they just "temporarily" shut down all the monitoring sites due to a credible Al Qaeda threat.

I use the RSOE site and app and have for a long time. Their site is showing a few - 3 in California in the last 24 hrs - but that is still so few compared to normal...USGS has the same info. I just feel the lack of activity isn't good. We'll see, I suppose!

There is definitely something wrong with my other app though!!

Thanks for the input!

Don't know/care as long as they stay away! There are always little ones happening. It's the bigger ones that are not happening, which is ominous. As stated before, could be pressure is building up for a really big one.

Sounds like your app (or one of its settings) is filtering out the lower magnitude quakes. (Most aren't human-perceptible until somewhere around 4 on the scale.) Plenty of activity still shows up when I have the magnitudes lower than 3 checked via the USGS KML file on Google Earth. Unchecking those and filtering out up to 3, and yeah it looks pretty quiet.

You are exactly right, Paul! I always filter lower than 2.0. I guess I should have called the thread " where have all the 2.1+ California earthquakes gone?"
