The command 'Thou shalt not kill' is a mistranslation. The word which the KJV translates as 'Kill' is the Hebrew רָצַח, ratsach which is defined by MIchelson as meaning to:
1. (properly) to dash in pieces, i.e. kill (a human being), especially to murder
[a primitive root]
KJV: put to death, kill, (man-)slay(-er), murder(-er).

So it is more properly 'You shall commit no murder'; Here is the thing, though, In Hebrew thought the fetus was not a 'Nephesh', a living soul, because it had not drawn breath so the killing of a fetus could not be murder. See the following from Exodus 21: 22-25

22 If men strive, and hurt a woman with child, so that her fruit depart from her, and yet no mischief follow: he shall be surely punished, according as the woman's husband will lay upon him; and he shall pay as the judges determine. 23 And if any mischief follow, then thou shalt give life for life, 24 Eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, 25 Burning for burning, wound for wound, stripe for stripe

Here the 'mischief' refers to harm to the WOMAN not the fetus.
