Snowden files 'show massive UK spying op'

BRITISH spies are running an online eavesdropping operation so vast that internal documents say it even outstrips the United States' international internet surveillance effort, The Guardian newspaper says.

The paper cited UK intelligence memos leaked by former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden to claim that UK spies were tapping into the world's network of fibre optic cables to deliver the "biggest internet access" of any member of the Five Eyes - the name given to the espionage alliance composed of the United States, Britain, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

That access could in theory expose a huge chunk of the world's everyday communications - including the content of people's emails, calls, and more - to scrutiny from British spies and their US allies. How much data the Brits are copying off the fibre optic network isn't clear, but it's likely to be enormous.

Edward Snowden has now leaked further information, this time detailing how GCHQ's surveillance is so huge, that is perhaps even overshadows the NSA's PRISM program.

This is quite worrying, as our privacy is eroding very fast, and it actually wouldn't surprise me if privacy is only an illusion now. We probably don't have any privacy whatsoever...

In any case. I wonder what programs Australia, Canada and New Zealand run, now that we know the NSA has PRISM, and GCHQ has Project Tempora...

And just think, until now... all we did was suspect these agencies of civilian spygames. Now that we know for a certainty, what do we do about it? They've pretty much alerady out-smarted, out-ranked, out-classed, and out-gunned us all. So seriously, what is anyone to do about all this?

First I want to state my absolute horror at this invasion of people's privacy. As a Brit I value privacy, not because
I am a terrorist but its something I believed I had in living in England. Afterall why did we fight world wars if not to maintain our independance?

I would like to make a point about the tv media especially on the BBC. Last night this was discussed by a journalist and an ex Metropolitan Police bigwig female. I appreciate the bigwig was part of the Establishment - but the journalist I had not credited with that somewhat dubious bent! However, there they were saying no problem we virtually expect it and it was quite OK - nothing to bother about. So clearly a sniedy campaign is about to lull any 'worriers' into a false sense of security.

Taking this one step further, my concern is that with all this information - WHO DO THEY SELL IT TO? Because these operations cost money and what better way to finance this lot than to sell conversations that have prime keywords in to corporations and any interested parties who will buy and sift this info for their own purposes e.g. health insurance. The list for this application is phenomenal simply because it would provide a complete profile of everyone's lives and could even lead to blackmail by the unscrupulous.

Being partially deaf I had never discussed this commercially yet suddenly I was inundated with hearing aid promotions. So selling private information is already part of our Institutions normal behaviour before they got their hands on all our live's complete intel. Just think about it

I don't think us little people have much to worry about with this or the NSA. I'm pretty sure they'll be spying on the big fish, not Joe public.

I have an RAF/USAF base about a mile from my house. en.wikipedia.org... close enought to hear their emergency practices. It's an old air field that is now covered in with huge aerials. It used to be somewhere as a youngster you could take your car and drive along the runway. It was a great place to learn to drive. That was all before 9/11.

I believe it is all part of the GCHQ network that links up locally to RAF Croughtonen.wikipedia.org... which has two of those huge golf ball structures. Even though they say they are RAF bases, they are staffed by the USAF as well.

I Disagree with you there, as you've mentioned we've suspected them doing this for quite some time, therefore they have not pulled the wool over our eyes completely. so they have not out-smarted-ranked-classed and gunned us, they were a top secret espionage program and we suspected they were doing it so in my opinion they failed from the moment we suspected them

pretty sure the only people who feel threatened by this a misguided paranoid mentally unstable people

I'd heard MI5 slapped a D-Notice on a lot of Snowden's information, so UK news sources aren't allowed to report on it. Anybody know if this is true?

It would explain why the story disappeared very quickly from the nightly news bulletins.

This group is working without oversight, without the control of our elected government, and you think it's paranoid to be suspicious about it?

These people can intercept the communications and private information of any politician, any judge, any lawyer, any journalist, and leak or use any information they can find against those people.

The most important thing people are not getting about all of this is that this means our democratic process has been all but destroyed. There is no accountability for these people at all, and they can mine, find and use any information against anyone without it coming to light.

This compromises every government, most importantly our own. This makes every decision every politician makes suspect and leaves our parliament vulnerable to abuse and massive corruption.

Lets just assume that one of the many private corporations involved with this has an interest in selling arms, they know that a long conflict in Syria is incredibly profitable for them. So they set up a top-secret little room in their offices where a small team are tasked with monitoring the communications of the Prime Minister and a handful of politicians on both sides of the house, and maybe throw in some Lords too. Lets assume that during this surveillance the team finds out that three of their targets have had affairs, that two have been looking at gay porn, that the PM has a dirty little secret too...

That private corporation can then use that information to put pressure on all those members of government to support a growing conflict, making them some big stacks of cash, and killing hundreds of thousands of people in Syria.

Lets also assume that with this same level of monitoring by private corporations and UNELECTED military interests they can also target the next leader of the Labour party, or the Green Party, or any other aspiring individual politician. During the next election process they can meet with both, maybe fund something, maybe get the ear of those running and see which is more malleable to their desires. Maybe they can find something really bad on each potential leader, pick one they want to win and then leak the info to the press for the other, taking them out of the race entirely and installing the one with the bigger secret and more able to be controlled.

Now they have the man (or woman) they want in that position, and they have a big secret they can then use to force that politician to act in their favor.

Let me make this clear... this is an unaccountable, unelected group, a mix of private companies, intelligence and military, a group which SHOULD be under the control of our ELECTED officials. Instead of being controlled by our elected representatives, this group has been allowed to become so powerful it can control our government.

If this has happened - and there's no reason to assume that it wouldn't have - we no longer live in democratic nations and there has been a coup that we were not even aware of.

Well I didn't see this report in the mainstream news here in Australia tonight (our nightly news was just a few hours ago). They did mention how Snowden was facing espionage charges though.

The MSM over here has been making such a big deal of this whole Snowden incident, but when it surfaces that Australia and the UK are involved suddenly they go quite. Quite ironic really.
