Former MoD UFO investigator Nick Pope called the UK sightings “spectacular”, adding: “The evidence is first rate. The witnesses are experienced pilots and there is radar evidence to back up their stories.”
-Three aircraft reports seeing 'two flat silver discs' on final approach
-Objects showed up on air traffic control radar - then vanished

.....why?
Go on to the Airprox Board's own site and read the actual report. The B777 pilot, whilst describing them as 'silver discs', also described them as 'man-made' and 'some sort of toy'. The truth is indeed out there, it's just not what a lot of people want to read.
After the read back the pilot stated that, at between 5 – 6 n m from touchdown, a couple of man - made objects had passed underneath the a c . These were described as ‘some sort of toy’. The report was acknowledged by the controller. At this time the B76 7 was at 6 · 3 nm from touchdown passing through 2300ft.
RAC MIL reports tracing action did not reveal the identity of the reported objects. Looking at possible sources, there are no registered radio - controlled model flying clubs listed in the area. Maps show many open fields under the RW26 approach where persons could operate remote control ac. There are saucer - shaped or blimp - shaped model ac , up to 4ft in diameter , on sale to the public .

The crew of the first aircraft described seeing 'some some sort of toy'. The information was passed on to air traffic control and then to police.
Where is the original report that the Sun is supposed to have got its info from?
Air traffic control staff then spotted a total of SIX UFOs on their radar before they suddenly vanished
3 As the B76 7 approached 6 nm from touchdown (passing 2200ft) the Gatwick 10cm replay showed a sequence of 6 primary position indication symbols moving E’ bound approximately 1 nm N of the FAT (Figure 3)
