Turkish police run over protesters with a truck!

As many of us are aware, there is civil unrest that has been ongoing in Turkey. They are unhappy with the current regime and it's policies domestically and abroad and it has become rather ugly, some have even called it the "Turkish Spring" among other things.

Violent protests against the government of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan engulfed Istanbul, Turkey’s largest city, on Saturday and spread to other cities, including the capital, Ankara, as tens of thousands of demonstrators took to the streets in a second day of civil unrest and faced the tear gas and water cannons of a harsh police crackdown.

Well, I just wanted to show this video I came across. It could be classified as an accident but from what I can tell (from both angles) the driver of this vehicle should have been expecting a crowd of protesters.

I say both angles because there are two separate videos showing the same incident from a different viewpoint and no matter how hard I try to justify the driver's actions, I just can't.

Opinions often differ so I am prepared to be "corrected" and perhaps someone can provide some information that will enlighten me as for why this driver's actions should be justified as accidental.





Obviously the citizens of Turkey are unhappy and they are causing unrest which will cause the government to counter-react. But does this counter-reaction justify ramming a crowd full of people with gigantic trucks with plows on them?

From what I have seen of the coverage so far this brutal incident is one of many so my guess is that the government has given the order to do whatever is necessary. It is said that they have retreated for the night but I wonder how they will respond if these protests continue.

I hope that things cool off in Turkey as the whole region already seems to be in turmoil and the last thing we need is for Turkey to erupt from the inside.

Lots of nations are building up pressure from the inside, just a matter of time before it all turns.

Um...yeah...no...that was totally on purpose no question.

There is a lot of unrest in nations all over the globe,I wonder when we'll have an American spring?

Wow, this next one is not for the squeamish but there is no gore so should fall within the terms and conditions, please ignore the title of the video as we do not know whether or not this man dies. If the title is correct and this man did not survive, my thoughts go out to his family and friends.

I don't know the ins and outs of the Turkish protests, so I'll say nothing about them. But I feel I can comment on the video you've given us.

A man shouts to get the attention of the water cannon truck, and presents himself as an obvious target. When nobody pays attention to him, he kicks the truck, then gets back into water cannon range shouting (I believe) the Turkish equivalent of "Shoot me, you %^%@, I dare you! Come on *@$*)$, shoot me."

So, they do.

To me, this should have been on America's Funniest Videos, or perhaps Abdul Faces Reality.

P.s. In the first of your three videos, there appears no way the protester could have been seen as he is crouched down behind that green material. At least that video makes me think "accident." Because of the water spray, I can't tell if he got away by jumping backwards or not. I think we can all agree that, unless there's been a huge definitional change, the vehicle is not a panzer.

What this man did does is not a reason for him to be killed. Learn some empathy it is sad you did not learn it at a young age from your parents.

justified or otherwise, if you look closely you'll see that the individual in question. the one that 'gets hit', actually slides off to the side, gets up and walks away with apparently nary an issue or encumbrance despite and no matter.

I agree there is nothing even funny about this. People that find humor in suffering of people and animals are pathetic and cruel.


Empathy is not something you are born with it is a learned trait and it is sad to see so many parents that have failed teaching this much needed life lesson. This man has a mother and father and children maybe.........he did not deserve this.

If I recall, I point out that, at least from the first video, it could have been an accident, which was what the OP was asking for. I further point out that the truck involved is certainly not a panzer.

Also I mention that the individual hit with the water cannon is, literally, begging to be shot with it. I don't see how any of the above can be considered objectionable.

Apparently people are upset over one of two things (or perhaps both). One that the police did shoot him with the water cannon. This seems to be a case similar to that of two brothers. The little one dances around the big one singing "Nyah, Nyah, You can't hit me," over and over and over, and over, until the big one sticks out a paw, and the little one falls flat. If you can't see the humor, or at least the reasonableness of that, we see the world differently.

Or, perhaps, you're upset that he was killed? But was he? All we have is the caption, no evidence at all. I believe deaths from water cannons are rare. Notice, that the clip ends abruptly. There is no one shown rushing to his aid, no blood, no ambulance, nothing. All we have is the caption. Remember, the caption was also where we learned that the police were using panzers.

Forgive me for saying this, but it appears that many here have an emotional involvement that may be clouding their judgment. And, no, I won't respond to ad hominems.

That's a good point, although he was near some other people that the driver would have clearly seen but he chose to drive towards them anyway. There's no excuse for that.

Having said this, the plough on the front of the truck is designed to prevent people falling under the wheels, so the protester would have been pushed aside by it.

At most I reckon he copped a few bruises and grazes; maybe a fracture if he was unlucky. He certainly didn't end up under the truck, so he will be alive and kicking.
