Scientists discover new way of generating stem cells

Scientists have used caffeine to achieve a stem cell breakthrough that many researchers thought impossible but which could lead to new therapies for many crippling diseases.

The story goes on to explain that until now "... researchers have only been able to grow human embryonic stem cells from surplus IVF embryos, which are not a genetic match with the recipient."

Study leader goes on to say ''Our finding offers new ways of generating stem cells for patients with dysfunctional or damaged tissues and organs,''

I find this sort of stuff amazing - apart from the ethical debate on cloning - the possible ramifications for longevity and patient treatment is endless.

These discoveries can't come fast enough. Humanity has been suffering with the same diseases for way too long. Electronic technology and discoveries have been moving at a rapid pace, but our medical breakthroughs and implementation is really going at a snails pace. Who would think we would still be using chemotherapy and radiation treatments for cancer after all these years!

We hear about these new medical breakthroughs, but lets start implementing them already! People are dying everyday because they have run out of options. Let these people sign liability waivers who have exhausted all their treatment options, and let them have access to immediate human trials. They have nothing to lose but a possible chance for a life saving cure.

It's human nature to want to extend life as long as possible. It's also human nature to want to reproduce. knowing these two basic facts, if we are going to carry on trying to extend life, we will also need to figure out ways of making our way of living on this planet sustainable...either that or we need to start seriously looking at spreading out into the galaxy...

The medical field is being largely held back by the ethics committees and laws. Even society itself stifles the breakthroughs that the medical field has and could be making. We as a civilization just aren't ready to accept most of these new ideas. I'm ok with anything that could help humanity in the long run, but not everyone feels the same way.
