I gather you're in Scotland so there could be differences ?? I gather things get tried out

before coming into force (ie the new benefits system is currently being tried out before being

rolled out nationally?) But I paid 'rates' for many years, until the council tax came into being

there wasn't a vast difference between what I had to pay.

But here is a little known unfairness in the benefits system which is probably little known

because it doesn't effect to many people

I worked my whole life and had paid in the whole required contributions for a full

pension plus a small (no minute) pension from the company I worked for and also

contributed towards. So my total pension now takes me up to the level of what the

government considers the poverty level ( a couple of £'s a week over) An acquaintance

of mine who only ever worked part time and so was not entitled to the top rate of

pension because she had not paid in enough, is now on a benefit which brings her

income up to mine. Now I have no objections to that ... but because she is in receipt of

'benefit' she does not have to pay any 'council tax' so in one stroke she is

automatically £1,000 a year better off than me !
Add to that as I live alone

I am entitled to 25% off my council tax which I paid for years when I was working and now

my income is less than half of what it was when I was working I still have to pay the

same
I see an unfairness there !!

Then we can get back to the show and slag each other of or whatever you do in a debate to win a star lol

I'm getting a pension to ele and i get a grant for my rates because of that fact, i can't understand the system at all no wonder this countries going down the pan it makes me bloody mad at times.

Also i no what your saying about the benifit system as my friend has never worked apart from the odd part-time job and she gets everything from the state if she needs a new suite or bed they give her a grant and its usually a few hundred pounds, i cancelled my sky tv so i could get broadband as i couldn't afford both but i think i get the better deal as tv's crap these days!!

I hear you. (Although I think the benefits cap is being rolled out in London first - and hitting everywhere else in July. So Scotland's not being used as the guinea pig on this occasion.)

I was aware of the 'blip' in the system that you talk about - it's a ridiculous system. As I understand it, under the last government many pensioners who had 'done the right thing' and stuck a bit away for their retirement ended up only slightly better off than those who lived for the moment throughout their working, or non-working, lives. (And as you demonstrate - even ending up worse off) Very disheartening.

It's just crazy - and a real demotivating factor for anyone currently working and trying save anything for the future.

Well hey Amanda - ya wee softie

Debate on here can get really heated - and actually sites like ATS are among the few forums that we can hammer out ideas, opinions and most importantly (to me at least) discuss the games our government play.

Although I enjoy speaking with people who agree with my perspective I rarely learn anything from them - it's when I debate with people I don't agree with that I tend to gain knowledge and information I never had before.

I think you need to remove those rose tinted glasses, having lived through Thatchers 80's and served during the Faulklands war I can guarantee things are not how you view them.

1) Abandon the Falkland Islands to the Argies.

The British government knew about the invasion before it happened, however it was not prevented so that the conservatives could get relected, they were trailing badly behind labour at the time. This is why for example she sent the Para's for good PR. You don't send the Paratroopers by boat and then have them march arcoss the island. It was all just to get relected.

2) Cow down to the IRA

And what Prime Minister has cowed down to the IRA? The good Friday agreement that actually stopped the vast majority of the violence was a cross party initiative, and it was not a cowing down, it was actually one of the few bits of decent politics this country has done.

3) Allow 200,000+Immigrants into the UK EVERY YEAR (It was between 13-50,000)

Thats because the open borders we have now were still only in the planning stage, don't forget it was John Major who signed the Maastricht Treaty, which Magret Thatcher had been leading until she was ousted

4) Institute the Human Rights Act, thus allowing Murderous Scum and Terrorists to live here with no chance of kicking them out.

Do you honestly believe that the only thing the human rights act does is keep terrorists in the country? The reason you hear all this crap in the papers is because the Tories are desperate to do away with it, they want to force you to work 70 hours a week, want to do away with minimum wage, want the right to just read all your mail, your phone calls, texts etc without you having any legal redress. The Human rights act is what protects you... and you are right She would never of signed it

5) Roll over and allow Europe to dictate what we can and cannot do.

Really? Can you back this up? The only time she stood up to Europe was getting a refund because we were paying more than anyone else, yeah good for her, but we were still paying more even after her refund. Did she stop the food mountains? Did she stop any of the laws they were passing? Nope

6) Run up hugh depts by spending money the country didn't have and getting our credit rating reduced.

She spent enough, mostly on Military.

Now let's look at some of the things she did do.

Destroyed all manufacturing in this country, The steel industry, the ship yards, the car manufacturers (The are no British car makers any more, they are all foreign owned with all the profit streaming straight out of the country) Closed nearly all the coal pits. Caused mass unemployment and devastated working class towns and cities, to such an extent that they have never really recovered.

Introduced the poll tax, so her cronies living in mansions paid less council tax than a couple living in a bed sit, causing riots and civil unrest until forced to back down.

The list of bad things she did is endless, but lets leave it with the best one, a real humdinger. Deregulated the banks, allowed them to leverage as much as they want, allowed them to create the derivatives market, causing the recessions of the early 90's, the late 90's and the bitch of a recession we are still going through from 2008. All this misery now felt in the world because of this endless recession, all caused by Margret bloody Thatcher and Ronald bloody Ragan. May their souls rot in hell for what they did.

You forgot to mention one thing Magret Thatched didn't do

Protect the people was was charged to serve

They didn't keep the rate system because the only people who paid rates were those

buying their homes...When you were considering a property purchase you needed to

know the 'rateable value' because that was a charge that had to be paid annually and

therefor needed to be budgeted for.

Council tax took over from the rates and was then levied on all property so that

everyone now paid for local services. I for one believe that is fairer!

The Community Charge (or Poll Tax as it was more commonly known) was the most unfair tax ever devised. . It shifted the tax burden from rich to poor, as it was based on the number of people living in a house rather than its estimated price

PrinceDreamer maybe you should buy a pair of glass now that everyone feels they want to insult me and read through the posts. I might have wrote the thread but it doesn't mean i agreed with everything she did or didn't do i made the mistake of not writing that in my thread before posting it.

This was a talk i had with friends the night before who like yourself and i where in the armed forces in the 80's, sorry if you didn't like what you read but instead of insulting me discuss it with me. (without the roses)

Thank you for joining in though your more than welcome as one says.

When you insert a "Quote" as part of a reply, anyone who has made a comment on that quote is added to the reply.

I wasn't trying to insult you, sorry if it came across that way. I didn't read through the replies before answering to your OP, I just replied to that particular post, which as you pointed out did not really indicate you had opposing views.

Anyway didn't mean to make you feel bad, but I just disagreed with what you said

no hard feelings

In my defense I am Dyslexic, and so is my spell checker, or so it seems. But never mind it could of been worse, I could of enlisted into the grammar police or even the pointless post society
