Why do people hate Thatcher?

(1) She introduced the hated poll tax, resulting in riots in London. She introduced it a year early in Scotland just to try it out.

(2) She opened British heavy industry up to world competition while everyone else was protecting theirs. The result was the destruction of British heavy industry, especially in the North of England and Scotland. The economies have never really recovered.

(3) She fought the British miners to a standstill. Within a few years, almost every British mine had been shut down. At that point, almost everyone realized that the miners had been right and Thatcher had been wrong. She was deposed by her own party a couple of months after the destruction of the mining industry became widely known.

(4) She was the education secretary that took free milk away from school kids, before she was even PM.

(5) Last and not so well known, she deregulated the city of London's banking industry to make sure it was 'competitive' internationally. Banks were allowed to play roulette with people's savings. In other words, the Wild West of banking. Reagen in the USA followed suite and the result, a few decades down the road, was the collapse of Western banks in 2007/2008 and a major depression across the West.

Thatcher was the women who destroyed British industry, introduced the hated poll tax, destroyed the British mining industry and last but certainly not least deregulated the banks setting up the current depression the West is in.

Way to go girl!

On the other hand you could argue her policies went a long way to better uniting the white working class and ethnic communities, on account of their shared hatred of her.

It almost brings a tear to my eye watching old footage and seeing people come together and support each other who otherwise wouldn't have.
Not that she intended that, just thought it would be another element to add to the discussion

Don't forget her idiot son....SIR Mark Thatcher (SIR???? WTH?) got lost in the desert so she used troops to find him, tried a coup and is now banned in the USA and other countries.
Amassed 60 million personal fortune with loan sharking and selling arms.
Also remember asbestos? she knew it was going to be banned and told her husband who quickly got his money out of it...insider trading.

I wasn't a fan of some of Margaret Thatcher's policies, but there is no need for this sort of rubbish.

It demonstrates a particular type of mentality, which would get me banned, if I were to elaborate.

I don't get it either. I haven't seen a single person give a specific example of what she did wrong.

She closed down a lot of industry that was mostly in the north of Britain, making thousands jobless and whole towns destitute from lack of work. What she did is still effecting the north. She also destroyed the mining industry in Wales.

The whole thing divided Britain. She achieved a lot for her wealthy friends by destroying the lively hood of the working class. Her plan was to change Britain from manufacturing to service and tourism. It was the start of the move to overseas manufacturing in cheaper labour markets, outsourcing to make more profits.

She also invaded the Falklands in order to boost her popularity, which was sinking fast, she was voted in for another term due to that.

But to really understand why she is hated so much you have to have lived through her rein as dictator.

Most people do not hate her - that is why she is having a funeral with military honours, second only to a state funeral. That will happen to no other Prime Minister alive today.

Alot of men hate her because she was a woman - deep rooted sexists. Also dead beats just love an excuse to be vile and dance on graves .. especially in modern Britain, it is par for the course.

Now if this doesn't send a clear message to all those who don't understand just how much she was hated and how little people can forget the damage she did then I don't know what will.

Hearing this on the radio and TV will be a solumn reminder to those in power that they represent ALL THE PEOPLE, not just those who hoist them into office to be patsies and henchmen(women).

No clear msg, sensible normal people just think, this lot are being petty minded, nasty and disrespectful - does your cause no good at all.

Dancing on graves, like cheering as people were hanged drawn and quartered, not tasteful. Is it a case of human devolution ? Or a case of the 'more things change the more they stay the same' ?

Why do you keep saying this - Mandela was a self confessed terrorist - he was involved in the plot to plant a bomb that killed many people - what about that is hard to understand? Did you not know that ?

Did you honestly not check the facts ?

Although initially committed to non-violent protest, in association with the South African Communist Party he co-founded the militant Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK) in 1961, leading a bombing campaign against government targets. In 1962 he was arrested and convicted of sabotage and conspiracy to overthrow the government, being sentenced to life imprisonment.

That is quote is from wikipaedia - not hard reading.

Plus in his auto biography ' A Long Walk to Freedom' he admits this and talks about his guilt and repentence.

The irony of these threads is that Thatcher was so stubborn (some say single minded) in life that she never listened to anyone else so if she could see what was written/said about her now it would not phase her, it would be water of an impregnable ducks back.

It is not what she did - John Major carried on many of her policies, it was the way she carried out her policies, with a seemingly disregard to the upheaval that she could cause. She always came across as uncaring, and very divisive, turning father against son in the miners strikes.

The UK of the 80s was a violent place, with Thatcher virtually turning the country into a police state so she could keep control of Miners Strikes, Major city riots, poll tax riots, IRA and let's not forget the football hooliganism. She encouraged a culture of "I am all right Jack, sod the rest of you" and "greed is good".

You cannot ignore the strong feeling running through the country, both good and bad - no other politician will get this, For me, I would like to see an alternative funeral/street party in e.g. Durham at the same time as the state funeral to allow the haters to vent their anger there. This sounds disrespectful, it really is not meant to be as it would also allow the state funeral to pass off with dignity, keeping the haters away from the state funeral.

Actually you are wrong. Millions of people north of the Midlands hate this woman's guts and she is undeserving of any funeral even partially paid for by the tax payer. Only one other politician has received a funeral paid for by the tax payer that was Sir Winston Churchill - Who could possibly argue with that? This woman is NOTHING compared to him. Nothing compared to some of the MP's who have stood in parliament.

Alot of men hate her because she was a woman - deep rooted sexists.

That is absolutely untrue.

Also dead beats just love an excuse to be vile and dance on graves .. especially in modern Britain, it is par for the course.

Those millions she made unemployed were not work shy and you'd do right by not trying to shame them any further than she did. She created many generations of jobless folk because when she took their jobs away from them she replaced them with absolutely NOTHING.

She was a vile human being and half of this country rightfully hates her guts. Its a disgrace that they're going about her funeral like she was a beloved public figure, a true waste of tax-payers money and time.

Planting a bomb, putting thousands of people out of work?

You do know thatcher is the mother of a thousand dead? How does it feel? Sheep farming in the Falkland and all that. Then there's her personal war in Ireland, Bobby Sands. She even took milk away from the kids, abolishing free school milk. She sold off public housing, privatised everything putting in the hands of greedy private landlords.

‘The PM said that she [thatcher] felt that no concession could be made to the hunger strikers in any way...The Government’s main aim should be to demonstrate that the blame for the hunger strike lay with the strikers themselves, rather than with the alleged inflexibility of the Government.’

Yeah right Maggie.

Unnecessary policies and actions done to simply bolster her popularity, and boost her career.

She did NOT plant a bomb EVER ...

Bobby Sands was an IRA terrorist who died from a self inflicted hunger strike.

I am glad she stopped the milk - it tasted revolting.

She allowed aspirational people to buy their own council homes - lucky them, they made alot of money !

There has been 25 years worth of bad policy that did not involve her - which has cause the woes you lament.
Compounded by Labour I am afraid.

Were you even alive when she was PM - I was. What you are saying has no truth.
I would however like to point out we have 8 million unemployed today - thanks to 12 years of Labour,

Also did you know what it was like in 1979 when Mrs Thatcher's govt took over - the dole queues were massive, 3 day week, electrcity cuts, the country had to go the IMF to borrow money [ first time ever], the dead were not being buried, rubbish not collected, black outs all the time.

That was under Labour.

Why are you denying that ? I can only conclude you do not know because you are just repeating propaganda or you were not alive at that time, so again you are repeating learned phrases of hate ?

He was in a prison, and being denied his rights as a prisoner.

Not really the point. A lot of kids relied on that free milk, we don't all come from the comfortable middle class you know.

She allowed aspirational people to buy their own council homes - lucky them, they made alot of money !

Those who could afford it, many more couldn't.

This is not about the last 25 years or the labour party, it's about Maggie Thatcher. If you want to talk about the Labour Party then start another thread. We could make comparisons with other people all day long, not really the point though is it? Hating one person does mean support for their opposition. I am a supporter of none of them.
Maggie just has a special spot in my heart because that was when I was young, and politically active.

Was Bobby Sands an IRA terrorist ?
Yes he was.

In 1972, Sands joined the Provisional IRA.[13] He was arrested and charged in October 1972 with possession of four handguns found in the house where he was staying. Sands was convicted in April 1973 sentenced to five years' imprisonment and released in April 1976.

He was charged with involvement in the October 1976 bombing of the Balmoral Furniture Company in Dunmurry. He was never convicted of this charge;

Sands and at least five others were alleged to have been involved in a gun battle with the Royal Ulster Constabulary, although Sands was not convicted due to lack of evidence. Leaving behind two of their wounded friends, Seamus Martin and Gabriel Corbett, Sands, Joe McDonnell, Seamus Finucane, and Sean Lavery tried to escape in a car, but were apprehended.

Later, one of the revolvers used in the attack was found in the car in which Sands had been travelling. In 1977, prosecutors charged him with possession of the revolver from which bullets were fired at the RUC after the bombing.

Immediately after his sentence, Sands was implicated in a ruckus and spent the first 22 days on boards in Crumlin Road Prison, 15 days naked, and a No. 1 starvation diet (bread and water) every 3 days.
