so the 'abomination that makes desolate' event will happen but only following the subject of verse 14 heralds "the end".

The end of Jerusalem.
Here, with notes from me in parens:

Daniel 9:
24 Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins (Christ would defeat sin), and to make reconciliation for iniquity (Christ would forgive all sin), and to bring in everlasting righteousness (restore grace), and to seal up the vision and prophecy(Christ fulfilled the prophecies), and to anoint the most Holy (Jesus Christ).

25 Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem (457 BC) unto the Messiah the Prince (Jesus Christ) shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times.

26 And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off (Christs Death), but not for himself (he died for us not because of anything he did): and the people of the prince (Romans) that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary (70AD); and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined. (The 70AD destruction of Jerusalem)

27 And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week (7 years Christ was to teach to the Jews confirming the covenant that God would send the Jews a Messiah): and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease (3 years into the 7 Christ is put to death invalidating the animal sacrifice, this is why the temple curtain ripped at Christs death), and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate (Jerusalem would be destroyed because of their rejection of Christ and to stop them from continuing animal sacrifice at the temple mount), even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.

The end of Jerusalem.

This is partially true...

Jesus is answering two questions in Matthew 24 and He runs both answers together...
...the disciples ask...

Matthew 24:1-3 "And Jesus said unto them, See ye not all these things? verily I say unto you, There shall not be left here one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down. 3 And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?"

The first question is "Tell us, when shall these things be?"
That is when will the temple be destroyed? ... no stone upon another...

The second question "what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?"

The subject of verse 14 did not happen before AD70...
...the Gospel of the Kingdom did not go to even the then known world before AD 70...
...this did not begin to happen until during the diaspora that followed the destruction of Jerusalem.

Just like the Abomination of Desolation motif fulfilled in Antiochus Epiphanies...
...and celebrated even now annually with Hanukkah aka Festival of Lights or Feast of Dedication...
...Jesus said would also have future application(s) from His time hack.

The concurrent answers to the dual questions and the reapplication of past prophecy/fulfilment...
...embrace both the destruction of Jerusalem and the end of the world predictions into one.

The sign of the end of the world is the Gospel of the Kingdom proclaimed in all the world...

Matthew 24:13-14 "And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come."

Immediately following this we have the Abomination of Desolation or a destructive idolatrous power appearing.
While this was partially fulfilled when Titus son of Vespasian burned and tore down the temple.in AD 70...
...it is to be repeated at the end of the world.

The Gospel of the Kingdom proclaimed in all the world is the last sign of His coming...
...followed by yet another abomination that makes desolate.

Its even a bit more complex then that...
Depending on the “book” and its translation, the statement is either “end of the world” or “end of an age”. These are two different things:

Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately. "Tell us," they said, "when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?"

The “end of an age” is referring to the “end of the age of the Jews”, which is the beginning of the final age or the 'end of the world'. The end of the “old covenant” and the beginning of the “new covenant”.

Matthew has already used the term συντελείας τοῦ αἰῶνος in chapter 13...

39 The enemy that sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are the angels.
40 As therefore the tares are gathered and burned in the fire; so shall it be in the end of this world.
49 So shall it be at the end of the world: the angels shall come forth, and sever the wicked from among the just,

Here it is used on the broader scale with clear end of the world images.

I think AD 70 fulfils the prophecy but does not 'fill it full'...
...because we are yet to see Jesus 'coming' (see Matt 24:3)

Well, yeah I'm not saying its complete, but much of it was completed already. Quite a bit of it was completed in 70AD. Its ongoing, though there is not much left yet that has to occur before the return of Christ. We will see natural disasters continue to increase, prices continue to inflate, the gap between classes grow wider, and completion of the push for a word-wide biometric national ID system (ATM looks like it will be done by 2017). I believe that we still will have some sort of plague, possibly an asteroid impact, and the destruction of Damascus. That is about all that has to happen in the next 87 years, and we are still right on track.
