This is no suprise to me what so ever. The thing that dictates how many people die as a result of random violence, acts of savagery and so on, has
nothing to do with the availability of firearms. The real cause of the commission of violence, is an unwillingness on the part of a regional
government, to deal with the things that cause a person to kill, specifically in terms of mental health issues.
If a person who has a mental dysfunction which makes them more likely to have a violent outburst, it matters not one bit, wether they pick up a
rifle, a pistol, a knife, a baseball bat, a fireside poker, a brick, a hammer, or even use thier own fists. The potential for a terrifying incident to
occur are precisely the same, no matter which impliment they aquire in order to spread destruction.
Since the problem is not the tool, but the wielder, one would assume that the correct way to deal with it, is to correctly identify those who are
most likely to have such an outburst, and engage those people in a system designed to either cure, or confine those individuals. Obviously, it would
be best if people could be treated effectively enough that they could become members of society, but at the moment, in the USA specifically, it seems
that there are large numbers of people, known to be a potential risk to society, who are NOT being treated in any but the most superficial manner, for
ailments that could lead to the deaths of innocent people.
This state of affairs cannot stand, unless the government there are prepared to accept the losses to thier society, that are caused by the inaction
they have displayed. Remember, I am not talking about murders committed by those who are legally sane here. I am talking about those who are clearly
suffering from a severe personality issue, or plain psychopaths, many of whom could never be tried as legally responsible for thier actions.
Holding these people, or keeping a proper track of them, is a paramount issue for these times, and unless the US government wants Sandy Hook to look
like a cliff top walk on a summers day in a few years, they are going to have to handle these delicate issues, with a firm hand.
