Hello,

I have a friend who purchased a new PC, it's running W8.
Came with a trial of Kaspersky Anti Virus.

The Trial is up... I was going to suggest using Microsoft Security Essentials, but don't
see it for W8.

Whats the best "free" alternative Anti Virus for W8 ?

I've used Commodo in the past, as well as AVG, I like Commodo better than AVG.

Thoughts?

In Windows 8, it should be called Windows Defender. This should be sufficient enough for the average user as long he doesn't go to the wrong sites lol

Below is a link that should explain more.

Windows Defender

Awesome.

I think that one should be sufficient.

Thanks much.

I agree with previous posts but I suggest Malware Bytes as a second defense. You can get an OEM Pro copy from a computer store for 19 dollars or so and it's a good cheap investment to stop the bad guys. My best,

W8 is malware in itself

Consider setting his computer free

Yeah, I haven't had that discussion yet. I don't have W8, but have "played" with it
a little on other PC's... don't like it one bit.

Malwarebytes is a good second defense since it will find some things that your typical antivirus will not find during a scan.

I don't have Windows 8 but I have used AVG on XP & Win 7 for a while now and haven't had any issues. Of course though you need to stay on the nice sites, lol.

I like AVG.

I actually dont really like windows defender. It has always been a let down. A useless let down.

Windows Defender takes forever to do scans, third party antivirus products scan so much faster. Though it is good that Windows has a built in AV now since people tend to let their paid antivirus programs lapse so Windows Defender would kick in after a certain amount of time so their system isn't left as a sitting duck for malware.

Watch out... Your on this site so I am guessing you dont like to be tracked by company's. Some of these programs track your every move. I would not trust any anti virus software that has occult symbolism logo's but then again you are using windows witch(red green blue red) uses these symbols.

So if Microsoft is occult does that make Apple a religious cult?
