Seems right. Crossing the field of view of STEREO B and rising above the ecliptic.

This post is insightful when "looking" at incoming objects, or "planet x"

Alternative view for "object incoming" theories:

Thanks for the confirmation Phage.

C/2012-V4 is currently visible in the Southern Hemisphere. After its trip around our Sun it will be visible in the Northern Hemisphere. It's appearing to speed up as it approaches. Not on a collision coarse with Earth, thankfully.
Nothing to fear...except the unknown!

I'm no astronomer either, but this is curious:

ssd.jpl.nasa.gov...

Click the forward button until it reaches Feb 16 (enable java to run at the top of your browser if necessary).

It looks to intersect Earth there, what distance is .0034 AU?

509.000 km.

Earth to Moon distance:
356,400 km to 406,700 km

So it's pretty close, but small compared to the moon.

Ummm..if you run the JPL applet by the HOUR you will see the object go CLOSER than .0001 AU to a closest distance of 2.0E-4 which is 18,591.1615 miles or 29,919.5741 kilometers.

Just below our sattelites that are at 22,500 miles. I'd venture a guess to say that's pretty close.

Pic is too small JPL LINK HERE Run by the HOUR through FEB 15th, 2013. Approximately 11:00 PM(one more click on the foward button changes to the 16th)

How can that even be right? If the comet in your .gif is the same object in the video, then the video would show it moving LEFT to RIGHT, but instead, it moves the opposite. Can you comment on this? What you posted just doesn't add up for me.

Or, you could just go to the close approach data for more accurate data and see that closest approach will be on February 15th at 19:25. A nominal distance of 0.00023 AU, minimum of 0.00018 AU, maximum of 0.0003.

But what about Feb 16, 2013? I'm no expert on this, maybe you could explain 3.0E -4AU

That would be rather close yeah?

edit: Got my numbers from Feb 16 2013 and not 14th.

then the video would show it moving LEFT to RIGHT

C/2012 V4 has a "clockwise" orbit.

Yes. But it's closer on the 15th.

That IS interesting... Any "experts" have any further info. on the path of this comet? Seems like there is conflicting data on its trajectory. If this comet comes THAT close it could pose a big threat to our satellites and Earth's gravity could change its path.

That would be a sight to see, a comet coming so close.

2013 is shaping up to be a wild year for astronomy with all the comets incoming and the solar maximum.

They are not talking about a comet. They are talking about 2012 DA14, an NEO asteroid.

I saw the title of this thread and the amount of flags, and I'm not ashamed to say that my initial reaction was "Yeah right....."
So i watched the videos and read the thread, and my conclusion is "Yeah right........"

I like his explanation. It's just passing by close to the camera and creates the illusion of being almost as large as Earth. Does seem to be going rather fast though. I'll keep my eye on this thread. It's interesting that this object has not been officially labelled and we are left to speculate.

It has been, pretty much. It is this comet.
