Take a look at the British flag, French.. to name a few.

I have had my own light pillar experience. My first thought was also Aurora, but I had seen the Aurora before and this was different. Turns out that my photo was of light pillars also. I was out on a frozen lake at night, flying my RC plane, doing some long exposure photographs. When I noticed the pillars of light, I landed the plane and took some photos of them. Some post processing helped to bring out their intensity and colors.
