Six mortar rounds have hit the headquarters of the Iraqi National Guard. The building is located in Mashahidan, 40Km from Baghdad. There are no breakdown of figures as to killed or injured at this point. U.S. Blackhawk helicopters are evacuating casualties.

There is so far no clear breakdown on the number of dead, but more than 100 people are believed to have been killed or injured, the officials said.

Six mortar rounds fell on the building in Mashahidan, 40km (25 miles) from the Iraqi capital, according to reports.

The Iraqis died and 80 others were hurt when mortar rounds hit an Iraqi National Guard base near Taji, north of Baghdad, at about 9:45 a.m. local time today, according to a military statement e-mailed from the capital.

Iraq's fledgling security forces are a frequent target for militants opposed to the US-backed government.

"A national guard base was attacked this morning, four people were killed and 80 wounded, all of them national guards," a defence ministry official told the AFP news agency.
