MANILA, Philippines – Philippine President Benigno Aquino III said Sunday that his government has reached a preliminary peace agreement with the nation’s largest Muslim rebel group in a major breakthrough toward ending a decades-long insurgency in the country’s south.

“This means that the hands that once held rifles will be put to use tilling land, selling produce, manning work stations and opening doorways of opportunity.”
He cautioned, however, that “the work does not end here.”

finally some good news, if this treaty goes through it would bring at least some peace to the Philippine nation. that would leave primarily the communist group and the CIA to deal with.

as it is things have been rather calm in the Philippines recently, haven't heard of any mass protests like elsewhere in the world, partially because MILF called for calm while it was all happening as they have been negotiating and were getting close to a deal.

guess that "travel alert" from the US and followed by Canada and Britain wasn't really called for.

for those who don't know the MILF is the main Muslim extremist group in the Philippines. MILF stands for Moro Islamic Liberation Front.

i had never even heard of that OTHER use for MILF, just tried to wiki it and what came up first rather shocked me, maybe that little thing about using the original headline should be changed

Admittedly, it is an unfortunate and ironic acronym for an Islamic jihadi organisation, given their dislike of sex or porn.. I'm just waiting for the Wahhabi Army for the Neutralisation of Kaffirs to be formed....

As for the OP though, this is good news. Over 100,000 people have died in the fighting over the last few decades and it's about time both sides sat down to sort this out. It's a shame so much blood has to be split before people can act like adults..
