Spirit of 'fair play' or tit-for-tat? Not condoning either tactic but how can the GOP assail the 'Mormon call' which presumably makes religion an issue when they have been working since the last election to tag Obama as a Muslim in order to make religion an issue? Can't have it both ways.

I think we are back to the same pivot point. The United States has the most liberal protections of free speech in the world...and that is the way it should be. France? England? they can prosecute you for slander etc. and often do take the tabloid to court. We still lead the world in tolerating free-speech...and I am proud of that, even when this utter trash arises.

Aside from laws...the best we can do is shine a light on liars and morally bankrupt folks...do our best to hold them accountable in the court of public scrutiny etc.

For pure political junkie purposes I'd like to see the origins of this traced and might give it a shot. I'll post what I find.

There is a difference. Attacking a religion, a thought, a philosophy, a dead prophet...is not slander.

Attacking and damaging the character and career of a living person without proof is slander and/or deformation of character. And yes...those are illegal. The First Amendment was created so people could speak out against government and religion without fear of repercussion...but there is a go around. If the creator of this were to say something along the line of "it is my opinion that this is true", he can potentially get away with it. When you present such things as fact and do not ad "it's my opinion"...it is possible for it to be construed as slander/deformation of character.

All that being said...it's a pretty treacherous thing to do. I do not care for Obama or Romney but...let's keep the slander on each others family to a minimum. I also disagreed with them dragging up Romney's polygamist family history...for me it's a big "who cares?"

Yes ... because it was the truth. (the Islam film said Muhammad had sex with kids = true)
From what I have read .. this film about Obama's mother is simply not true.

Even if it was true that she was a porn star .. and therefore the film is legally just fine ... it shouldn't matter to anyone when it comes to elections. Last I saw, it was legal to be in porn movies. And how she earned a living doesn't matter as far as if Obama can run the country or not. Just as it doesn't matter that Romneys father went from poor to upper middle class by doing a good job in business. What the parents of the candidates did to earn a living = IRRELEVANT.

Not buying that 1 million copies were sent out.

These pics have been around since at least 2009 and even Snopes decided scrub the original page on the subject from their website and from an archive site.

It appears Snopes.com scrubbed their "report" on Obama's mom posing nude. When Snopes originally published their article they tagged the claim "undetermined" and then sometime later tagged it as "false" claiming the nude woman in the photos was Marcy Moore. Now Snopes pulled the article altogether and had the URL excluded from the Wayback Machine. Wonder why?

Well. no. I don't think Romney himself produced the video. And I didn't make that claim. But I have a personal belief that he is willing to do what it takes to win this election and I wouldn't doubt that he is pulling out all the stops, because of the polls.
